As bankrupt Sears approaches a deadline for bids from suitors who may want to save the company or pick up pieces in liquidation, the company is escalating its demise by closing 80 more Sears and Kmart stores in March, according to CNBC. Stores will be closing from California to New York (see the complete list below to learn if your neighborhood Sears or Kmart store is on the list) with liquidation sales beginning in two weeks, according to the report.
It's still possible all Sears and Kmart stores may close if a buyer does not present a bid to save the company. For now, though, employees apparently learned today that 80 more Sears and Kmart stores will be closing soon in states across the country, including Arizona, California, Mississippi, Illinois, North Carolina, New York, Florida, Tennessee and more. See the complete updated Sears and Kmart stores closing list below (according to CNBC).

When Sears filed bankruptcy in October of this year, the retailer, once an American retail leader, had more than 700 stores. It has already closed or is in the process of closing more than 180 stores it had labeled unprofitable. Today's news that another 80 will close soon will leave Sears with fewer than 500 stores remaining if its able to survive bankruptcy and avoid complete liquidation.
We'll know in less than 24 hours if Sears has a chance to survive since the retailer faces a December 28 deadline with the courts for potential suitors to make an offer. Thus far, only its chairman, Eddie Lampert, has shown interest in a bid to keep Sears operating, saying he wants to pull together $4.6 billion to purchase and therefore save Sears—protecting the jobs of 50,000 workers and keeping many stores open.
Lampert was expected to encounter difficulty pulling together financing for his $4.6 billion proposal because most of the money would come from outside sources and Sears doesn't have much to offer in worthy collateral for that type of money beyond its name, leases and locations.
"The question is if there is anyone but Lampert or the employees who view Sears coming out of bankruptcy—rather than liquidation—as the better outcome," said Philip Emma, senior analyst with Debtwire and an expert in retail bankruptcies, according to CNN
