UPDATE: New Irelia trailer shows her knives and dashes.

League of Legends Irelia's rework will release soon, if a recent teaser is any indication. Riot Games just dropped a teaser trailer for Irelia, the Defiant Blade, to explain a bit of her backstory. The 45-second trailer describes how Irelia and her people had to learn to fight in order to defend themselves from ongoing attacks from the Noxian invaders. Here's a summary of everything in the new trailer.

  • Ionia was a peaceful island where thought and knowledge prevailed above all. One day, Noxian invaders came to the land to mess up the good vibes. Noxus is the ultimate bad guy in League of Legends, a nation of tyrants led by Swain, Darius and Leblanc.
  • The Battle of the Placidium was incredibly violent and many soldiers lost their lives that day. In the scuffle, we see Yasuo fighting off Riven, who's still a member of the Noxian forces. Eventually, the moral dilemma of fighting for the bad guys becomes too much and she switches over to fight alongside the good guys.
  • Irelia and the rest of her people learn to wield magical weapons to force back the Noxian invaders. The "defenders of the first lands" learn the power of the blade and manage to protect the Ionian people. In the trailer we see an army of ninjas wielding halberds, which I hope has something to do with her abilities. I'd love to be able to summon an army of ninjas, but that's just theorycrafting.
  • The summary of the video mentions that it's been a decade since the battle and that the plaque commemorates "the young woman who inspired a revolution." Irelia is a strong fighter, but her rework may turn her into a leader.

We don't know much about the gameplay details behind Irelia's rework and I'm happy that I'll finally get to learn more. One of the best Irelia mains in the world, IreliaCarriesU, was invited to playest the champion in December. He described the rework as "trash" but was invited again after a few more months of playtesting. We haven't heard about her since, but I'm hoping that means she's improved quite a bit.
