Man Shot Dead By Police After 'Terrorist-Related' Incident In London, Multiple People Apparently Stabbed

A man was killed by armed officers in London after several people were apparently stabbed in what police said was a "terrorist-related" incident.

The man was shot on a street in Streatham, South London, London's Metropolitan Police said. Two people were believed to have been injured in the incident at around 2 p.m. GMT and two hours later had the scene "fully contained."

One witness posted a video to Twitter showing the scene after the shooting on Streatham High Road where the alleged suspect can be seen lying facedown on the street. The witness told Newsweek in a message on Twitter that he heard screaming and looked outside to see a man wielding what appeared to be a knife.

"I was in the library and I heard people screaming and looked outside a man with a weapon I believe a knife, was shot on sight by armed police," the witness told Newsweek. "The whole of the road was locked off."

Police had urged people to stay away from the scene as emergency services deal with the incident. "A man has been shot by armed officers in #Streatham. At this stage it is believed a number of people have been stabbed," the police tweeted. "The circumstances are being assessed; the incident has been declared as terrorist-related."

After the incident U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has responded to the attack, writing on Twitter, "Thank you to all emergency services responding to the incident in Streatham, which the police have now declared as terrorism-related. My thoughts are with the injured and all those affected." In a statement, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also thanked police, security and emergency services for the "courageous" response.

Witnesses took to Twitter to say they heard three gun shots fired at around 2 p.m. GMT on Sunday.

"Something major happening in Streatham High Road. Armed police and roads closed off," one person wrote on Twitter.

Another witness, Dave Chawner, wrote on Twitter, "I had to stay with someone who'd just been #stabbed in #Streatham for 30 minutes before a single ambulance arrived. I just hope he made it."

The incident comes just over two months after police killed a terrorist in the city. Usman Khan, who had been convicted of plotting a terror attack in 2012, was shot dead on London Bridge after he fatally stabbed two people and injured three others shortly after attending a conference on prisoner rehabilitation on November 29.
