Who Lit Luke's Lightsaber? Mark Hamill Says 'Star Wars' Jedi Legend Was No Virgin

Mark Hamill says that—at least in his headcanon—Luke Skywalker had sex. Responding to a question regarding Skywalker virginity on Twitter, Hamill said Luke didn't die a virgin, at least in the backstory he made up for the character.

"Make up your own backstory," Hamill urged fans, admitting that the issue of Luke's virginity is ultimately undetermined within Star Wars canon. "In the one I made for him myself, the answer is: no."

Hamill, who will return as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker (likely as a Force Ghost, as Yoda, Obi-Wan and his father Anakin have before him) after his death in The Last Jedi, has so far declined to say exactly who took Luke's maidenhead, but as far as the character is concerned, he's hardly on shaky ground.

Before Disney purchased Lucasfilm, Luke's chaste virtue wasn't even in question. Luke married Mara Jade and had a child together, Ben Skywalker, in novels that have since been declared Star Wars "Legends." But while the new timeline of events opened by Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn't leave much room for Jedi coitus, there are several possible sexual partners in his past.

Camie Marstrap

Camie Marstrap was friends with Luke and lived in the Tatooine town of Anchorhead. When Luke says "I was going to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!" in the original Star Wars, he's whining that he won't be able to go and hang out with his friends. In a scene deleted from the final cut of Star Wars, Luke visits his friends in Anchorhead, including Marstrap.

There's only one obstacle to Luke and Camie getting it on like high schoolers: Camie was dating Luke's friend Laze Loneozner. Still, that's hardly stopped teenagers in the past, and a scene from The Last Jedi's novelization points to Skywalker's still-burning desires. Similar to Jesus' fantasy of stepping down from the cross and experiencing married life in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, Skywalker fantasizes about different choices from his hermitage on Ahch-To, dreaming of a life with Marstrap, back on Tatooine.

It's also possible Luke lost his virginity while still a teen on Tatooine, just not to Camie. Considering the high rates of group masturbation among teenagers, it's most likely that some of Skywalker's earliest sexual experiences were shared with his childhood friends Windy, Deak, Laze Loneozner or Biggs Darklighter. But could it have gone further than that? While most evidence from the Star Wars movies points to Luke's heterosexuality, homosocial "bud sex" between rural heterosexual men is a well-documented phenomena, at least on Earth. Perhaps it was Darklighter's rakish moustache that first made Luke quiver.

Nakari Kelen

In the Star Wars novel Heir to the Jedi, Luke teams up with hotshot Rebel Alliance pilot Nakari Kelen. The two developed a romance, but it was cut short by Kelen's death on Omereth, leaving Skywalker regretting what he left unsaid. While all signs point to Kelen dying before their relationship could be consummated physically, who's to say nothing happened on all those long spaceflights?

Tula Markona

While their time together was brief, spanning only a few issues of Marvel's Star Wars comic book series, Skywalker also had a flirtation with Tula Markona, the granddaughter of a Jedi. Despite their long, romantic walks, Luke's devotion to the Rebel cause ultimately thwarted any possibility of a real relationship between them.

There are several other possible windows in the Star Wars timeline where it's possible, even likely, Luke Skywalker had some sex. After destroying the Death Star, Luke became an instant Rebel Alliance celebrity, making his days as the dashing leader of Rogue Squadron a likely fertile time in his life. Luke could have slept with any number of aliens, humans or droids—there are trillions of possible candidates in the Star Wars galaxy.

But after the events of Return of the Jedi and the formation of a new Jedi Temple (later destroyed by Kylo Ren) Luke losing a still-intact virginity grows increasingly unlikely. The Jedi Order destroyed before Luke's birth was full-up with stodgy virgins and Skywalker, the last remaining Jedi, seemed determined to follow in the traditional Jedi footsteps. It's only in The Last Jedi that the old ways are abandoned, leaving it up to Rey to forge a new path for the future of the Jedi Order.
