A new trailer for Netflix true-crime series Making a Murderer reveals what's at stake as Steven Avery and his co-defendant Brendan Dassey fight to have their convictions for the 2005 murder of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach overturned.
Making a Murderer Part 2 follows Steven Avery's appeal process, as Kathleen Zellner, an attorney known for her work overturning wrongful convictions, reinvestigates suspects and looks to exonerate Avery.
For the new season of Making a Murderer, documentarians Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos had exclusive access to Avery, Dassey and their legal team throughout the process.
Avery, who served 18 years for a rape he didn't commit, was exonerated by DNA evidence in 2003. Two years later, he was arrested again for murder. The question at the center of the new season of Making a Murderer: was this new charge revenge from a county government facing a $36 million lawsuit for his past wrongful conviction?
Central to the case against Avery is the confession of Dassey, his nephew and alleged accomplice. Dassey's defense team now claims the confession was false and coerced, something also seen in famous wrongful convictions like that of the Central Park Five, in which the NYPD pressured teenagers to confess to a murder they didn't commit.
The new season of Making a Murderer includes 10 episodes, following both post-conviction court proceedings and examining the toll this case has taken on the citizens of Manitowoc County.
Making a Murderer Part 2 will premiere on Netflix Oct. 19.
