A man in Tennessee led officers on a car chase and crashed his vehicle into a tire store while his mother was inside the automobile with him, according to police.
According to an affidavit obtained by NBC affiliate WREG, Kentrell Hullom, 30, was first stopped by police on I-140 in Sycamore View, in Memphis, on Monday afternoon.
Police said Hullom was known by officers and had active warrants for his arrest. They also noted there was a woman sitting next to him on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
During the traffic stop, Hullom is alleged to have sped away and driven through on-coming traffic.
The chase came to an end when Hullom allegedly crashed the vehicle into Sal's Tires and Complete Automotive Repair on Summer Avenue.
Police said Hullom leaped from the car and led police on a brief chase on foot before being apprehended and taken into custody.
Officers later learned the woman in the vehicle was Hullom's mother and said she had told her son to stop the car as she feared for her safety.
Police said Hullom's driving license had been suspended since 2011.
Inmate database information seen by Newsweek said Kentrell had been charged with evading arrest, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.
Newsweek has contacted the Memphis Police Department for comment.
Last week, a high-speed police chase in Indiana ended in tragedy when the driver of the vehicle collided with the back of a semi-truck trailer.
Lake County Sheriff's Office police had attempted to pull over Eric White, 21, in Gary on Friday on suspicion of speeding and running a red light.
White sped away and reached speeds of about 130mph and police momentarily lost sight of him.
When White started to swerve across lanes on Interstate-80/94, it caused him to crash into the semi-truck trailer.
Indiana State Police told local media the car spun out of control across the highway, colliding with a wall, before White drove back across the lanes and ultimately crashed with the truck.
White's girlfriend, Britni Griffin, 20, was thrown 100 yards from the passenger's seat when the last collision happened and suffered fatal injuries.
She and White's one-year-old son were found dead in the backseat of the vehicle.
Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said: "Any loss of life in such horrifying circumstances is tragic, but the loss of a child is especially disturbing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives during this incident.
"Police officers are faced with tragedy daily, but considering the circumstances with this incident, we are offering to help officers cope."
