'A Man Gave a Speech on…Moral Values and Everyone Assumes He Was Insulting Our President:' Colbert

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert ripped President Donald Trump for canceling a trip to a cemetery for the WWI dead in France during Armistice Day commemorations because of the weather.

"These soldiers fought tirelessly through brutal conditions, so of course Trump canceled his trip to the ceremony due to rain," Colbert said during his show Monday night.

"Well, you can't blame him. He's only got one umbrella and he couldn't figure out how to bring it on the plane," continued Colbert as he played a clip of Trump struggling to pull an open umbrella through the door of Air Force One before abandoning it and entering the plane.

Trump was due to attend the ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery where the Battle of Belleau Wood took place in June 1918. There is a large monument to the American marines, including 8,100 casualties, who captured the area.

It is around 60 miles east of Paris and Trump planned to fly by helicopter. But he canceled due to bad weather, sparking accusations by critics of dishonoring the servicemen who fought in treacherous conditions during WWI.

The White House said the weather conditions grounded the helicopter so the only route was by car which created "scheduling and logistical difficulties."

"They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn't even defy the weather to pay his respects to the Fallen," Nicholas Soames, a British Conservative M.P. and grandson of the wartime leader Winston Churchill, wrote on Twitter.

During his show Monday night, Colbert also highlighted French President Emmanuel Macron's speech to world leaders in Paris at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which memorializes those who died in the conflict, beneath the Arc de Triomphe.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism," Macron said. "Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism by saying 'our interests first, who care about the others?' We erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great, and what is essential: Its moral values."

Macron's speech was taken by many as a cutting rebuke of Trump and his nationalistic "America First" policy on economics and foreign affairs. The president's campaign slogan is also: "Make America Great Again."

Colbert said: "I just want to point out that a man gave a speech about the importance of moral values and everyone assumes he was insulting our president."

After returning from France, Trump took to Twitter to dig at other world leaders about trade and America's contributions to NATO.

"Just returned from France where much was accomplished in my meetings with World Leaders," Trump wrote on Twitter.

"Never easy bringing up the fact that the U.S. must be treated fairly, which it hasn't, on both Military and Trade. We pay for LARGE portions of other countries military protection, hundreds of billions of dollars, for the great privilege of losing hundreds of billions of dollars with these same countries on trade.

"I told them that this situation cannot continue - It is, and always has been, ridiculously unfair to the United States. Massive amounts of money spent on protecting other countries, and we get nothing but Trade Deficits and Losses.

"It is time that these very rich countries either pay the United States for its great military protection, or protect themselves...and Trade must be made FREE and FAIR!"
