Man Refusing to Buy Pregnant Wife's 'Expensive' Drink Craving Slammed

The internet has attacked a man who refused to buy his pregnant wife more lemonade after giving the last one to his sister.

In a post shared on Reddit earlier this month, under the username u/Adventurous_Bat8695, the man explained that during a trip to a Disney park, his pregnant wife developed a taste for a type of pink lemonade that they only sell there. Before coming home she made sure to buy a few.

One day while his wife was out, his sister stopped by, spotted the last bottle of his wife's pink lemonade in the fridge and asked him if she could have it. Without hesitation, he said she could, since he knew a website where he could buy more.

But when his wife came home and couldn't find her last lemonade, which she was craving, he said he wasn't going to buy her any more of them. He gave three reasons: she's diabetic, the lemonade is not good for her, and it's quite expensive.

According to Healthline, it is safe to drink lemonade if you are diabetic as long as it is sugar-free, and the best option is to make it at home with simple natural ingredients.

The "pouty" wife, as described by the poster, then said she was going to take their child back to the Disney theme park so she could buy more of it.

Clinical social worker Jennifer Bohr-Cuevas told Newsweek that marriage is not a walk in the park, and that boundaries in a relationship matter.

She said: "As a clinical social worker, I have treated countless couples with the presenting problem of boundary crossing. Boundaries in a partnership do matter. They set the rules and the tone for the relationship. It is important to set healthy boundaries so that we don't hurt or compromise our partner."

In her opinion, the husband crossed multiple boundaries, refusing to respect his wife for the individual that she is, with her own needs and desires.

"The lemonade was of value to her. It was not his place to give it away so freely. The husband should have thought about his wife's reaction before he acted. A boundary was again violated when he refused to replace the lemonade. He disrespected his wife's right to bodily autonomy. He can be concerned about her sugar intake. However, he is not entitled to tell her what she can do with her own body."

She added that in a healthy relationship, decisions are made jointly, and people have the responsibility to think and act with their partner's best intentions in mind.

"Open communication, respect for your partner's individuality, and healthy boundaries keep people on the path of a thriving relationship."

The post, shared on the r/AmItheA****** sub where users discuss their actions with impartial strangers, quickly went viral, receiving over 7,900 upvotes and 2,100 comments.

One user, DelurkingtoComment, whose comment received over 36,600 upvotes, said: "[You're The A******] you say you let your sister have the drink because you recalled your wife finding a website to buy more. Then when your wife asks you to get more, you say no. That's an [A******] move."

And Jm20034k added: "Then all the people on here saying, "you're just pregnant not a special angel princess, get over yourself!" makes me even more confident that women are just expected to do it all alone with a big smile on their face. Makes motherhood seem [really] enticing."

Another user, onedayatatime08, commented: "[You're The A******] You gave your sister the drink with the reasoning that your wife had a site to buy more, then when she wants to buy more you're saying no? Why are you telling your wife 'no'? This is a simple, harmless drink. You say it [is] high in sugar and costs too much? Are you her doctor or something? Do you control all the money? She's pregnant. Seriously??"

NCKALA wrote: "[You're The A******]. You write [that] the lemonade is expensive, yet you gave it to someone. You should have given your sister the link to the website to buy her own if this drink is not readily available in your area. [You're The A******]. If the price of lemonade is going to make a difference in next year's vacation, especially with your wife being pregnant now, what are YOU going to give up for the next 12 months? [You're The A******]. The lemonade was not yours to give. It belonged to your wife."
