Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls GOP Senators Supporting Brown 'Pro-Pedophile'

Georgia U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has labeled three fellow Republicans who may vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's appointment to the Supreme Court as "pro-pedophile."

Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah joined Democrats in voting to force Jackson's nomination out of the deadlocked Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday. They are also likely to vote in favor of Jackson's appointment when a full Senate vote is expected to take place by the end of the week.

During Jackson's confirmation hearings, other Republicans repeatedly questioned Jackson's record of sentencing cases related to child porn. In a tweet that echoed an earlier comment from Donald Trump Jr., Greene accused the pro-Jackson Republicans of supporting pedophiles after they voted to move the nomination forward.

"Murkowski, Collins, and Romney are pro-pedophile," Greene tweeted. "They just voted for #KBJ."

Newsweek reached out to the offices of Collins, Murkowski and Romney for comment.

During the confirmation hearings, in response to an exchange between Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Jackson and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin of Texas, Trump Jr. tweeted "when did Democrats become so pro-pedophile?"

"Has it always been so or is it a more recent trend made easier by technology?" Trump tweeted. "At any other time in American history the mere defense of these perversions would be far more than disqualifying... now it's not even shameful to them."

Several Republican senators claimed during the hearings that Jackson displayed a pattern of being too lenient when it comes to sentencing in child porn cases. Fact checks by outlets including the Associated Press and The Washington Post have deemed the claim to be misleading.

Jackson, who would be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court if confirmed, told the Senate that "nothing could be further from the truth" than claims that she was too lenient on sentencing child porn cases, while describing the cases as "some of the most difficult" to preside over.

Last week, Collins became the first Republican senator to announce that she would support Jackson, explaining in a statement that she believed the role of the Senate was solely to examine "the experience, qualifications, and integrity of the nominee" rather than "whether a nominee reflects the ideology of an individual Senator or would rule exactly as an individual Senator would want."

Murkowski and Romney joined Collins in announcing their support for Jackson on Monday, with each senator issuing similar statements explaining the reasons for backing the judge.

Murkowski said that she would support Jackson while rejecting "the corrosive politicization of the review process for Supreme Court nominees," although she admitted she would "not agree with all of Judge Jackson's decisions and opinions."

Romney described Jackson as "a well-qualified jurist and a person of honor" when announcing that he intended to vote in her favor, while adding that he did "not expect to agree with every decision she may make on the Court."
