Marjorie Taylor Greene Warns Democrats They Will 'Face the Wrath'

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has said Democrats will "face the wrath" of the American people if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer shelves the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The Republican-controlled House voted in February to impeach Mayorkas over the handling of the border crisis by President Joe Biden's administration. But a two-thirds vote in the Senate is required to impeach him, which is unlikely as Democrats control the Senate 51-49.

House Republicans have spent months investigating Mayorkas' actions as they continue to position border security among the key issues in the 2024 election.

Senate leaders are expected to dispense with the impeachment trial quickly. They may table a motion to dismiss the impeachment articles, which would require only a simple majority to pass. Or they may hold a quick vote on the articles, in which Republicans would have little chance of securing a two-thirds majority.

Greene, a Republican congresswoman from Georgia, said that a move now by Schumer, a Democratic senator from New York, to table the articles would be a "grave mistake" and would "really hurt Democrats this election year."

"This is the number one issue across the entire country," Greene said in a video posted on her Truth Social account. "This isn't a Republican issue. This is an American issue. Democrats care about border security. Republicans care about border security."

She added: "Americans everywhere are not only frankly outright pissed off that they are paying for all of this—they are losing their schools; they are losing their community centers; they are losing their parks. And they are watching their city streets, apartment buildings and hotels being flooded by illegal aliens, while they are being forced to pay for it. They are angry.

"So here's the deal: If Chuck Schumer wants to table these articles of impeachment, I think the Democrat Party as a whole is going to face the wrath of the American people."

Greene has repeatedly called for a full Senate trial to be held on Mayorkas' impeachment.

"Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas are intentionally flooding our country with criminals who are killing and raping Americans. Americans should never have to live in fear asking themselves 'am I next?'" the congresswoman wrote on Truth Social and other social media platforms Monday.

"Chuck Schumer and the Senate must hold a trial to remove Mayorkas from office or they too will have blood on their hands," she continued.

Newsweek contacted Greene's office for comment via email outside of normal working hours.

Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma said in February that the impeachment effort would not succeed in the Senate.

"It'll fail in the Senate," Lankford said. "If I could use the House term, it'll be dead on arrival when it comes over."

Schumer called the impeachment vote "a new low for House Republicans."

"This sham impeachment effort is another embarrassment for House Republicans," Schumer said in a statement. "The one and only reason for this impeachment is for Speaker Johnson to further appease Donald Trump."

Greene will have a key role should the Senate hold an impeachment trial for Mayorkas. She is among 11 House Republicans who have been appointed as impeachment managers, according to a February 5 resolution.

The other impeachment managers are Mark Green of Tennessee, Michael McCaul of Texas, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Clay Higgins of Louisiana, Ben Cline of Virginia, Michael Guest of Mississippi, Andrew Garbarino of New York, Austin Pfluger of Texas, Harriet Hageman of Wyoming and Laurel Lee of Florida.
