Mary Trump's Plan to Counter Republicans in 2024 Election

Former President Donald Trump's estranged niece, Mary Trump, wrote on Friday about her plan to counter "Republican negativity" in the 2024 election.

Ahead of the 2024 election, Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has been shown to be leading President Joe Biden in five out of the six key swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania, according to a poll by The New York Times and Siena College that was published last month. Multiple national polls also show the former president leading Biden despite Trump's legal troubles, as he faces a wave of indictments at both the state and federal levels. Trump has maintained his innocence in all cases against him.

In a post to Substack on Friday, Mary Trump, known for her outspoken criticism of her uncle, shared her plan to counter Republican negativity in 2024 by using optimism, adding that it wins elections.

"Remember, optimism isn't just a feeling; it's a powerful political tool. If we embrace a positive, solutions-oriented approach, Democrats can energize the base, attract swing voters, and counter Republican negativity in 2024. In a close election, optimism can be the difference between victory and defeat," she wrote.

In her post, Mary Trump added that Republican campaigns often rely on fear and division, but that optimism offers a contrasting message of unity and progress, adding that the 2024 election is vital for "salvaging" democracy.

"We should take a different tack and remind ourselves why we need to approach the 2024 election with a sense of real possibility and purpose, not the dread, fear, and rage that the right deploys so cynically," she wrote.

Mary Trump added: "Everything is at stake in 2024 and emerging triumphant will require all of us pulling together and taking a multi-faceted approach to salvaging—and then strengthening—our democracy so it finally becomes truly representative for all Americans."

This comes after the former president's use of language has been under criticism as he previously, during a town hall with Fox News host Sean Hannity earlier this month, faced questions about whether or not he'd be a "dictator" during a potential second term. Trump, after deflecting the question, said he would only be a dictator on "day one" to implement some of his policies, but would not abuse his power in the White House.

Mary Trump's Friday Substack post also follows an interview she did with CNN earlier this month, in which she discussed what a second Trump term could look like, warning that it would be "absolutely disastrous."

"It would be the end of American democracy. America would become a leading autocratic nation in the world and we would be, therefore, emboldening countries like some of those you mentioned earlier, North Korea, China, but also the pro-autocratic tendencies of countries that haven't entirely lost their way, but are well on their way to, like Hungary and Turkey," she said.

Newsweek has reached out to Trump via email for comment.

Meanwhile, the former president and his supporters have made similar claims about Biden and the stakes if the current president wins again in 2024. Donald Trump has routinely said that the country will collapse without his leadership, while his supporters accuse Biden and Democrats of authoritarianism.

In her CNN interview, Mary Trump also emphasized how dangerous it would be if her uncle was successful in securing a second term.

"It would be absolutely disastrous not just for the future of American democracy, but the future of the Western alliance and global liberal democracies, so I don't think we can overstate just how incredibly dangerous a second Trump administration would be, and we need to start preparing the ground for making those arguments now," she said.
