Sacramento Mass Shooting Leaves Six Dead

Six people were killed and 10 injured in a mass shooting in Sacramento, California, as bars and nightclubs were closing in the early hours on Sunday.

The shooting happened near the vicinity of 10th Street and K Street, an area packed with restaurants and bars just blocks from the state Capitol building, at around 2 a.m.

At a news briefing, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester told reporters there were no suspects in custody. Authorities don't know if the victims were deliberately targeted or how many shooters were involved, she said.

Describing the shooting as "a really tragic, unfortunate situation," Lester said police officers had been patrolling the area at about 2 a.m. when they heard gunfire.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a large crowd gathered on the street and six people dead, she said.

Another 10 people either took themselves or were transported to hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Video shared on Twitter after the shooting showed a brawl and people running through the street as the sound of rapid gunfire was heard in the background.

Lester described the scene, which was spread out over multiple blocks, as "complex and complicated" but said it is now "secure."

She said the police department is seeking the public's help in identifying the suspect or suspects responsible for the shooting.

"We are asking for the public's help," she said. "So if anyone saw anything, has video or can provide any information to the police department, we are asking for their assistance."

Police on Twitter told residents to avoid the area as a "large police presence will remain and the scene remains active."

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said on Twitter: "Words can't express my shock & sadness this morning. The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend."

He added: "Rising gun violence is the scourge of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it."

In a statement, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said: "Sadly, we once again mourn the lives lost and for those injured in yet another horrendous act of gun violence. Jennifer and I send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and to the wider community impacted by this terrible tragedy.

"As it is early in this investigation, my administration will continue to work closely with local and state law enforcement as we monitor the situation. What we do know at this point is that another mass casualty shooting has occurred, leaving families with lost loved ones, multiple individuals injured and a community in grief."

He added that the "scourge of gun violence continues to be a crisis in our country, and we must resolve to bring an end to this carnage."

Sunday's shooting comes about a month after a gunman opened fire in a church in Sacramento, killing his three daughters before turning the gun on himself.

The man, identified as David Fidel Mora-Rojas, also fatally shot a male chaperone who was supervising a visit with his daughters at The Church in Sacramento, in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood, on February 28.
