The first trailer for The Matrix 4 has been shown to an exclusive audience at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, revealing early details about the upcoming movie. The full trailer is due to be released online very soon, as promised by a mysterious new promotional website that has appeared online.
The small crowd that gathered to watch it have leaked details about the sequel, including the official movie title, plot points and casting.
The movie is currently scheduled to release in movie theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021. Newsweek has reached out to Warner Bros. to find out when the first official trailer will drop online for everyone to see.
What Is the Name of 'The Matrix 4'?
There were a lot of rumors and speculation surrounding the official title of the movie but Warner Bros. put an end to speculation and confirmed it during its CinemaCon reel.
The fourth movie in the Matrix franchise is called The Matrix: Resurrections.
It follows on from the first three films of the franchise: The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.
What Happens in 'The Matrix: Resurrections' Trailer?
The new trailer opens with Keanu Reeves' Neo, or perhaps Thomas Anderson, seemingly back in the fictional world, just like he is in the first movie in 1999. He's talking to a therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris, and describes his dreams which sound a lot like moments from past Matrix movies.
Neo then comes into contact with Trinity, with Carrie-Anne Moss reprising the role, in a café but they don't recognize each other. Trinity is heard asking Neo: "Have we met?"
Another shot shows a blue pill falling into a sink, Neo's face distorts in a mirror turning him into an old man, while what we assume is a younger Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) hands him a red pill telling him "time to fly." The song "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane plays over a lot of this footage.
Following all of the scene setting, action set pieces feature all of the flying and acrobatic fighting we've come to expect from the Matrix franchise.
Matrix Teasers on a Mysterious Website
Log onto www.whatisthematrix.com and you'll be faced with a classic decision: red pill or blue pill? The immersive experience shares personalized previews depending on which choice you make, and the narration always reflects the real time on your device.
Users who log onto the site and pick the blue pill will get a teaser trailer narrated by Neil Patrick Harris' character. Footage shows glimpses of Reeves' character in various situations as reality starts to crumble around him.
Pick the red pill and the voice of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is heard and we see a glimpse of him for the first time too. Small images of Jonathan Groff with no mouth, Reeves walking through a crowd of S.W.A.T teams and a digital image resembling a human are shown on screen. Both teasers end with the promise that the full trailer is coming soon.
What Else Did Warner Bros. Show at CinemaCon?
Before showing The Matrix: Resurrection trailer, Reeves and Moss were shown discussing the impact The Matrix has had on their lives. Reeves said: "You'll hear the sentence 'The Matrix changed my life.' I say, 'Thank you, it changed mine too.'" Moss discussed how she never thought the line "dodge this" was going to be a big deal.
New footage from The Batman was shown too, one year to the day since the first trailer debuted. Director Matt Reeves said it was partially inspired by the story Batman: Year One while Robert Pattinson, who'll play Bruce Wayne, said his character was "really working out his rage. All the fights seem very personal."
After being hit with multiple delays, The Batman is scheduled for a worldwide release on March 4, 2022.
