Tuesday night, there were five tickets that matched the five white balls but no gold Mega ball for the $1 million second prize. Two of those tickets — one each in Pennsylvania and Texas — bought the $1 Megaplier to win $5 million.
May not only marks the 17th anniversary of Mega Millions, but the fifth month of the year has also produced some of the game's biggest winners in history. If the winning numbers hit on Tuesday night, it would be among the 13th-largest jackpots in Mega Millions history.

The winning numbers for May 17, 2019 were: 05-17-28-32-63 with a Mega Ball of 11 and Megaplier of 3. There were three tickets sold that hit the first five numbers, but missed on the gold Mega Ball, for the game's second prize of $1 million. They were sold in Massachusetts, Missouri and Texas.
There were 23 tickets matched four white balls and the gold Mega Ball for the $10,000 third prize, and five of those winners spent the extra $1 on Megaplier, which meant their ticket was worth $30,000
Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery and one of America's two biggest lottery jackpot games. Jackpots start at $40 million, and other prizes pay from $1 million to $2 million or more with a Megaplier. Tickets are $2 and odds of winning with a $2 Mega Millions ticket are one in 303 million.
