A man from New Jersey was the last person to claim a Mega Millions jackpot prize. Michael J. Weirsky won $273 million from the Mega Millions jackpot on March 1, according to a Mega Millions press release. He claimed his prize on Thursday at Lottery Headquarters.

Weirsky, who is from Warren County, New Jersey, said during a press conference that he had almost lost the ticket the day he purchased it. He told lottery officials he forgot it at the counter of the convenience store where he purchased the ticket, but someone gave the tickets back to the clerk. The New Jersey native returned to the store the next day and retrieved his tickets right before the Mega Millions drawing.

"Congratulations to Mr. Weirsky on his multi-million dollar jackpot prize. In addition to Mr. Weirsky's big win, retailers across New Jersey won big, too," said New Jersey Lottery Acting Executive Director James A. Carey, Jr., in a statement. "We have more than 7,000 retailers across the state, and this Mega Millions run has generated more than $1.1 million in commissions and bonuses for those retailers."

Earlier this month, the winner who won the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot claimed the prize. The South Carolina Education Lottery Commission announced that the winner of the largest jackpot payout in U.S. history claimed their prize from the October 23 drawing on March 4. The commission said the anonymous jackpot winner chose the one-time payment of $877,784,124.
