The anonymous winner from South Carolina who claimed the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot prize announced last week that she would be donating some of her winnings to local charities. The winner's lawyer, Jason Kurland, told CNN that the winner will be donating a part of her winnings to the Alabama Red Cross to aid tornado relief and several other South Carolina charities.

Kurland told CNN the winner wanted to donate a portion of her claimed money to the charities after a tornado touched down in Alabama in March. The charities include the Ronald McDonald House of Charities of Columbia, South Carolina; the City of Simpsonville Art Center; the One SC Fund for Hurrican Florence relief; and In The Middle, a charity that supports women who are battling breast cancer, according to CNN.

"It just felt like we were having this great event when there were people suffering nearby," Kurland previously said.

The last person to claim a Mega Millions prize was a man who won $273 million after winning the jackpot on March 1. Michael J. Weirsky of Warren County, New Jersey admitted he had almost lost the winning ticket when he first purchased it at the QuickChek convenience store near his home, according to a Mega Millions press release. Thankfully, someone who found the tickets at the counter returned them to the store clerk and Weirsky was able to retrieve them shortly after he realized it was missing.
