How Old Is Melania Trump? Birthday Tweets Are a New Presidential Tradition

Despite President Donald Trump suggesting this morning he might have forgotten her present, first lady Melania Trump turns 48 today.

Born in the former Yugoslavia in 1970, Melania Trump married Donald in 2005 and became first lady of the United States 12 years later.

As social media has become ever more important, world leaders have taken to using their accounts for the odd sentimental message to a loved one. Since 2012, former President Barack Obama has posted a message on Twitter for his wife, Michelle, every year on her birthday.

In 2012, Obama started the tradition with a message that read "Happy Birthday to @MichelleObama! Singing is optional, but you are welcome to add a note to her birthday card," along with a link.

In 2013, the message was a simple one, with a series of three pictures showing the presidential couple goofing around together. The year 2014's had an image of the former president with his arms around his wife and a message that said "thank you for all that you do."

He used that same message in 2016 with an image showing himself about to hug the then first lady. The year 2015's message thanked her for being an "inspiration every day" and included a picture of Michelle playing with their dogs.

Then just over a week before Obama would step aside for the soon-to-be-anointed President Trump, the official presidential Twitter account posted a picture of the couple sitting side by side on a golf cart as they attended his inaugural ball along with the touching message: "To the girl from the South Side who took on a role she didn't ask for and made it her own: Happy Birthday, Michelle. I love you."

Having left the presidency—and the official twitter accounts—Obama took to Instagram this year to post a picture of the couple sitting together along with the note: "You're not only my wife and the mother of my children, you're my best friend. I love your strength, your grace, and your determination. And I love you more each day. Happy Birthday."

This is only the second first lady birthday of President Trump's tenure. In 2017, he posted a picture of the two of them walking hand-in-hand through crowds on his Inauguration Day a few months earlier along with the message: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our @FLOTUS, Melania!"
