Melissa McCarthy has won her first award of this weekend, but it isn't such a compliment. McCarthy was awarded the "Worst Actress" Razzie Award at the 39th Annual Razzie Awards posted to YouTube on Saturday. The actress was named for her parts in The Happytime Murders and Life of the Party.
McCarthy won the award over fellow nominees Jennifer Garner in Peppermint, Amber Heard in London Fields, Helen Mirren in Winchester and Amanda Seyfried in The Clapper.
McCarthy did not immediately respond to the award. Along with the negative feedback, however, McCarthy was also given the Razzie Redeemer Award for her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me?. McCarthy is nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film. The Redeemer Award was fan-voted by the public on GoldDerby.
This is not the first time a Razzie award winner has been nominated for, and even won, an Oscar the same year. This notably happened to Sandra Bullock when she won a Razzie for her role in All About Steve the same weekend she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Blind Side. Bullock is also one of few celebrities who appeared at the Razzie awards to receive her Worst Actress trophy.
The 2019 Razzie winners also include Donald J Trump for Worst Performance Combo. The sitting president was voted for his appearances in Fahrenheit 11/9 and Death of a Nation. The Worst Actor award also went to Trump for appearing as himself in the movies.
The Worst Picture Razzie went to Holmes and Watson, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Riley. It was nominated against Gotti, The Happytime Murders, Robinhood and Winchester.
Though she faced criticism for her roles in Life of the Party and The Happytime Murders, McCarthy could win big with her Best Actress nomination at the 91st Annual Academy Awards. Can You Ever Forgive Me? is said to be one of McCarthy's most difficult and believable performances yet. In the film, she plays Lee Israel, a writer who begins to profit off the work of others. The criminal path Israel takes is a biographical story.
McCarthy is slated to appear in two 2019 upcoming releases, The Kitchen and Superintelligence, according to IMDB. She is also named in a handful of pre-production films that have yet to be titled.
