Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer for many Americans, as well as honoring those in the military that have fallen in wars or defending their country. Memorial Day itself falls on May 27 this year.
Many businesses will remain open over the weekend and Memorial Day, so there are plenty of opportunities to find yourself a deal in the holiday sales.
Newsweek has compiled a guide to the best deals happening on Memorial Day Weekend as well as sales in your favourite stores.
Albertsons: As part of its Weekly Deal flyer, the superstore is preparing for some great weather over Memorial Day Weekend. If you spend $25 in store you can get a Rib-Eye Steak or Cooked Shrimp for £5.99 per pound. It also has money off BBQ essentials such as chicken thighs, hot dog and hamburger buns, sausages and beef roasts.
Aldi: The supermarket has discounts on BBQ and outdoor products. Between May 22 and 28, you can get discounts on BBQs, fire pits, outdoor furniture, gardening equipment and paddling pools.
Food-wise, you can get fresh St. Louis pork spareribs (discount depending on your local store), and fresh Maui pineapple Atlantic salmon on a cedar plank for $9.99 per pound.
Fred Meyer: Garden lovers will appreciate the discounts at this store. According to its weekly ad, the store is reducing prices on flowers and gardening equipment. If you fancy spending Memorial Day Weekend in the garden then you're covered. Outdoor planters have a discount of 25 percent and tools are reduced by half price. The store is also having a buy-one-get-one-free sale on Memorial Day itself.
Kroger: Varying store to store, the superstore brand is pulling out the stops for Memorial Day Weekend. You can see weekly deals using the store locator on its website. For example, at Fry's in Cave Creek, Arizona, the store is discounting Home Merchandise by 20 percent over the weekend. There will also be a buy-one-get-one-free sale on Memorial Day itself.
Safeway: Meat-fans, you're in luck! Safeway has gone all out on its meat savings including beef roasts and ground turkey for $2.99 per pound, sweetcorn for $1, beef strip steak for $6.99 per pound, and beef topside for $3.99. Beer is also discounted; a 30 pack of Coors is $18.77. Offers end on May 28, 2019.
Trader Joes: The store is not giving away much for its Memorial Day Sale, but keep checking with your local store for details.
Whole Foods: Open long hours on Memorial Day, there is a real treat in store for customers. Amazon Prime Members can get special savings as well as an extra 10 percent off the yellow sale sign. Check your local store for specific deals.
Sam's Club: The store has a sale on until June 2, 2019. Discounts on ranch dressing and BBQ sauce are available to all shoppers while offers on burgers and sausages seem to only be on offer to its club members.
7-Eleven: The convenience store has not made any announcements relating to its Memorial Day sale, however based on previous years we can expect a buy-one-get-one-free sale on the holiday itself. Check your local store for any discounts over the weekend.
Costco: The warehouse giant will be having a sale until June 16, 2019, but there are plenty of items suitable for your Memorial Day plans. Beef burgers and sausages are discounted, as well as outdoor furniture according to its website.
If you're a technology buff then you can also make the most of discounts on tablets, televisions and mobile phones. If you're also a Citi bank member, you can discounts on tyres and LG televisions if you use your card.
Kmart: The superstore currently has a 40 percent off sale on all outdoor furniture, according to its website. One of the biggest savings is the "7colo Distinctive Cotton Canvas Hanging Rope Chair with Pillows Rainbow Hammock Swing Seat" which is reduced to $19.99 from $200.
Kohls: Between May 22 and 27, for every $50 you spend you earn $10 in Kohl's Cash. According to the website, shoppers will be able to use Kohl's Cash at any Kohl's store. All they need to do is enter their Kohl's Cash number and PIN at checkout on Kohls.com. They can also apply their Kohl's Cash directly from the Wallet to purchase with the Kohl's App. There is also a sale online and in-store, with discounts on clothes, furniture and much more.
Old Navy: There is already a sale on the Old Navy website and you can check at your local store to see if they are having additional discounts for Memorial Day. If you want to get into the patriotic spirit, Old Navy has also discounted its "Flag-Print Jersey Swing Tank for Women" from $19.99 to $10.
Publix: Up until May 28, the supermarket brand is offering discounts on steaks, apple pies and sausages. You can also buy-one-get-one-free on condiments for your BBQ meals.
Sears: According to its Facebook page, the store is offering 40 percent off new appliances in-store and online. Any purchases over $399 will also get an extra 10 percent off.
Sears Outlets are also having a Memorial Day sale with discounts of 25-70 percent off regular retail prices, according to its website.
Target: The superstore is discounting home items and patio furniture by up to 30 percent, plus an extra 15 percent off furniture and rugs, according to its website. If you want to get your grill items the same day, you can sign up for a Target 4-week trial membership.
Walmart: You can already make the most of the Memorial Day sale online, with up to 40 percent off summer items, according to its website.
Macy's: The department store's Memorial Day sale has started online, with limited offers on men, women and kids clothes.
Mall of America: There are Memorial Day discounts on brands such as Casper, Everything but Water, Sketchers, Carter's, Swarovski, Famous Footwear, Gameworks and many more, according to the website.
Home Depot: There are 5,162 savings happening right now at Home Depot for Memorial Day, according to the website. There is 15 percent off grills, perfect for BBQs this weekend, and 40 percent off patio equipment.
Lowes: If DIY is on your agenda for Memorial Day Weekend, then this is the place to be. The Memorial Day sale has already started, with discounts on paints, furniture and much more.
Nike: Check out the Nike Clearance section on its website for the latest discounts for Memorial Day.
Ikea: The Swedish homeware and furniture store has massive savings for Memorial Day.
- All mattresses over $150 get 20 percent off for Ikea Family members until June 2, 2019.
- All outdoor furniture get 20 percent off for Ikea Family members until Memorial Day.
- All cushion covers and decorative cushions are 20 percent off until June 2.
- 25 percent off natural fiber baskets.
- All SUNDVIK cribs get 20 percent off until June 2, 2019.
- In store only, you can get all custom countertops with 15 percent off.
Apple: As well as the military and veteran program, Apple products are going to be on sale at superstores such as Wal-mart and Amazon.
Belk: Customers can get extra 20 percent off this Memorial Day Weekend.
Brandsmart: The store's Memorial Day sale is now active, with discounts on various products.
Ashley: The furniture store is having a massive Memorial Day Weekend sale online, with discounts on various items.
Best Buy: The Memorial Day sale ends June 6, with 40 percent off home appliances.
PC Richards: According to its Facebook page, local radio stations will be at seven of PC Richards' superstores with a chance to win awesome giveaways. Locations include Bellmore, Patchogue, Riverhead, Southampton, Wayne and Norwalk.
Jeep: Get $500 Jeep Memorial Day bonus cash on select vehicles this Memorial Day. Go to your local dealership for more information on this and veterans / military deals.
Gamestop: Save up to 50 percent on select video games this Memorial Day.
