Two Men Catch Fire at Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Store in the Hamptons

Two men attending an event at Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop store in the Hamptons caught on fire after rubbing alcohol caused an explosion on the premises, according to authorities.

Sag Harbor Village Chief of Police Austin J. McGuire told Newsweek the incident occurred at 4 Bay Street on June 25. "It was reported to us at 6:04 p.m. as two subjects previously on fire. Apparently, it was during an event and someone added alcohol to a Sterno can causing it to flash and setting the two men on fire. The two men were extinguished with a fire extinguisher," he said.

The East Hampton police blotter initially said that rubbing alcohol "had been added to candles, causing a large explosion and flames."

McGuire added that one of the men was in serious condition after the incident and medevacked to Stony Brook University Hospital "with burns on the back and face." The other man suffered facial burns and was transported by ambulance to a hospital. He is "unsure of their current condition."

Surprisingly, this isn't the first time the actress' brand or her candles have been linked to fire.

A Texas man sued Goop last year over the brand's vagina-scented candle that he claimed "exploded" on his bedside table. Colby Watson filed a class-action complaint and sought damages of $5 million, alleging that after burning the candle for three hours, it became "engulfed in high flames" and left a "black burn ring" on his nightstand.

However, a warning on the $75 candle, called "This Smells Like My Vagina," urges users not to burn it for more than two hours at a time.

A spokesperson for Goop told NBC News in May 2021 that Watson's claims had no merit. "We're confident this claim is frivolous and an attempt to secure an outsized payout from a press-heavy product. We stand behind the brands we carry and the safety of the products we sell. Here, Heretic—the brand that supplies the candle—has substantiated the product's performance and safety through industry standard testing."

Earlier that same year, a woman named Jody Thompson won the same vagina-scented candle in an online quiz. She, too, claimed the risqué product caused chaos after lighting it.

"The candle exploded and emitted huge flames, with bits flying everywhere," she told The Sun in January 2021. "I've never seen anything like it. The whole thing was ablaze and it was too hot to touch. There was an inferno in the room."

Thompson, who was living in London with her partner at the time, continued: "We eventually got it under control and threw it out the front door. It could have burned the place down. It was scary at the time, but funny looking back that Gwyneth's vagina candle exploded in my living room."

Again, a spokesperson for the company told the publication they were "in touch with the woman to see if she followed the specific fire safety instructions included with the candle."

"At Goop, we vet the products we sell and make customer safety a priority, so we've alerted the manufacturer to the woman's issue and have also reached out to her to send her some Goop products to help pass the days in quarantine."
