Miley Cyrus Breaks Impressive Record

Miley Cyrus is an award-winning superstar singer and songwriter and now she can add another impressive accolade to her resume.

She is now going to be honored as a Disney Legend, which is a Hall of Fame program that recognizes individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to The Walt Disney Company. At 31 years old, the singer is the youngest person in history and the first of her generation to receive the company's highest honor.

Cyrus started her career when she was only 8 years old and by the time she was 13, she had auditioned for the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. The show made her a household name and helped launch her illustrious career which has gone from strength to strength.

The entertainment X (formerly Twitter) account Pop Crave shared the news to the social media platform and at the time of writing, it had been viewed 9.2 million times.

Newsweek emailed a representative for Cyrus for comment on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people took to the comments to express their joy over the news, with many saying this award has been a long time coming.

"Miley Cyrus 100 percent deserves this award & anyone that says otherwise just wasn't outside with us during peak Disney Channel," one person wrote.

"The names y'all mentioning.... Miley was 13 yo and she carried that network, she was bigger than any of her peers during that time, she had her own sold out tour at 14yo. Y'all just forget how f****** huge Hannah Montana was. Miley made Disney $1 Billion ALONE," another person posted.

"She might be the youngest but this is so overdue. She's been a Disney legend for a LONG time now!" a third person commented.

Someone else added: "GIVE HER HER FLOWERS EXACTLY she raised all of us!"

The X account belonging to Spotify also commented on the news, writing "a legend indeed" alongside a clapping emoji.

Others used the opportunity to criticize Disney, saying it tried to distance itself from the singer when she became more provocative while trying to shed her child star image.

Newsweek emailed Disney for comment on Wednesday.

"A 'you survived us' award is crazy. they tried to kill my sister fr [for real]," one X user posted.

"Disney going from sabotaging her to recognizing her as a staple in their company is a full circle moment," said another.

"As she should be especially after they tried to boycott her and her music when she dropped 'Can't Be Tamed,'" someone else wrote.

A fourth added: "'X deserved first' people are missing the point that this is not just an iconic vibes award, this is for people who changed the entire company. Miley gave em billions, 2 REAL LIFE successful pop stars and then went to WAR against Disney and WON and changed ex-acts path forever."

The other honorees this year include Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, Martha Blanding, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steve Ditko, Harrison Ford, Mark Henn, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, Joe Rohde, and John Williams.

"To be named a Disney Legend is the highest honor our company can bestow on anyone, reserved for those whose talent and achievement have earned them an enduring place in our history," said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

"The fourteen individuals to be honored as Disney Legends this year have each made extraordinary creative contributions across the worlds of Disney and we look forward to celebrating them at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event."

At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024, Cyrus was honored with her first-ever wins for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. "Flowers" was released in January 2023 and became the fastest song to exceed 100 million listens on Spotify.
