Miss America preliminaries were won by contestants from Virginia and Louisiana: Miss Virginia Emili McPhail won the onstage interview portion, and Miss Louisiana Holli' Conway won the talent portion for a vocal performance.
This year's Miss America pageant drew attention in Atlantic City this week when Miss West Virginia, Madeline Collins, got a positive reaction after answering her onstage question with feedback on President Donald Trump.
The question: What is the biggest issue facing the country?
"Donald Trump the biggest issue facing our country today," Collins answered. "Unfortunately he has caused a lot of divide in our country and until we can trust in him and the choices that he makes for our country, we cannot come united."
Miss America faced controversy in 2017 after CEO Sam Haskell resigned with other top leaders after an email scandal revealed vulgar and insensitive language used about former Miss America contestants.
There won't be a Miss America swimsuit competition this year for the first time. Former Fox host Gretchen Carlson was named chairwoman of the competition after the controversy and she announced that contestants would no longer be judged on physical appearance.
