Mother's Day horror: Woman Shot in the Head in Front of Baby Daughter

A woman in New York was shot in the head in front of her baby daughter as the pair celebrated Mother's Day.

Xiaowei Liu, 32, from Queens, was allegedly shot by her 43-year-old boyfriend during an argument, while her 8-month-old daughter and the child's babysitter were in the room.

According to police, Guohui Jiang, the boyfriend, called 911 following the incident and has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

"I think I shot my girlfriend in the head," Jiang said on the 911 call, according to a police source quoted by the New York Post.

Liu was rushed to the nearby Jamaica Hospital following the incident, and she was found to be in critical condition but is expected to survive her injuries.

Neighbors of the couple said they heard raised voices in what appeared to be an argument, followed by the sound of a gunshot at around 9:40 a.m. on Sunday.

One neighbor told the Post the woman had run into the hallway of their apartment building covered in blood.

"She said, 'He shot me,'" the neighbor said. "She had black all over her face from where the gun went off. She said, 'I was shot'.

"We all heard the pop. We heard arguing before it. They are [in the apartment] directly above us," the neighbor added.

Two guns were also found at the scene, police said, along with drug paraphernalia found inside the apartment where the alleged shooting took place.
