Mötley Crüe Fans Blame 'Woke Culture' for Tommy Lee Nudity Backlash

Tommy Lee isn't shy about showing off his naughty bits, and during a recent Mötley Crüe concert, he encouraged fans to follow (birthday) suit.

But while critics are condemning the drummer and Crüe for encouraging nudity, his supporters are slamming detractors for being too "woke."

Lee took to social media over the weekend to rail against those who were offended by comments he made during a show last Wednesday in San Francisco. The rock star tweeted out a news clip in which a fan appeared rattled that Lee had asked the crowd to expose their genitals.

"The world is too soft! Been doing this sh** for years Juan!" Lee wrote in the Sunday tweet, referring to the man who'd complained. "Mötley Crüe concerts aren't PG and never have been!!!! Grow the f**k up!"

In the clip, the fan explains that Lee's request came at a concert where minors were in attendance. He described the ordeal as being similar to "Sodom and Gomorrah," adding that "it was crazy."

Lee included some of his own musings on the matter when he added an overdub atop the news clip.

"Yo, Juan! I got a question or you," a voice (ostensibly Lee's) said while the fan spoke. "What the f**k do you expect to see at a Mötley Crüe concert, dude? We've been doing this for f**king ever."

Some of Lee's fans have weighed in to defend the rocker.

"What dumb parent takes a 6-year-old to a Motley Crue concert anyway?" one user said in a tweet. "They weren't going to church."

Another Lee fan said the furor over the ordeal was an example of "woke culture" at work.

"Someone literally complained to the news about seeing tits and dicks at a Motley Crue concert," she wrote. "Woke culture you're taking it too far...."

Yet another person refuted that argument, saying that many have been bothered by nudity well before the advent of "wokeness."

"That's got nothing to do with woke culture," they replied. "People have been complaining about that since Motley Crue got started, so basically for your whole life."

In addition to being famous for his music, Lee is well-known for his member. Just last month, he posted a selfie featuring full-frontal nudity on social media.

The drummer also famously starred in a 1995 sex tape with his then-wife, Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson. The infamous 54-minute home video got the Hulu treatment in a series released earlier this year, Pam & Tommy, starring Lily James as Anderson and Sebastian Stan as Lee. Nick Offerman, who also starred in the series, previously told Newsweek, "To see how Pam Anderson is the victim of sexism and misogyny, as the story plays out, I think will be quite eye-opening. It'll really serve as a foundational story to so many such tales that came after. It helps point up the distance that we still have to go in terms of treating everybody equally when it comes to seeing them with their clothes off."

Which leads to another potential issue with Tommy Lee's nudity request: Some say "woke culture" is gunning for Mötley Crüe, but the band has also grappled with allegations of sexual abuse.

In his autobiography The Dirt, bassist Nikki Sixx wrote that he "pretty much" raped someone at a party. Sixx claimed in the book that he'd led the woman to think that he was having sex with her in a closet, yet she was actually having sex with Lee.

Sixx later attempted to distance himself from those claims, telling Rolling Stone that he'd either "embellished" or fabricated the incident.

"I don't actually recall that story in the book beyond reading it," Sixx told that outlet in 2019. "I have no clue why it's in there other than I was outta my head and it's possibly greatly embellished or [I] made it up. Those words were irresponsible on my part. I am sorry."

Newsweek has reached out to representatives for Lee, Sixx and Mötley Crüe for comment.
