Marjorie Taylor Greene Says Democrats Trying to Give Trump 'Death Sentence'

Firebrand politician Marjorie Taylor Greene has weighed in on the mysterious death of a Russian dissident in prison—claiming Democrats are seeking a similar fate for Donald Trump.

Greene, a Republican congresswoman representing Georgia's 14th district, made the inflammatory comments on social media site X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday, writing that: "While Democrats suddenly care about Putin's political opponent dying in jail [...] [They are] trying to put Pres Trump in prison for the rest of his life which would be a death sentence."

Greene's comments come after the death earlier this month of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who had opposed President Vladimir Putin. He died aged 47 in an Arctic penal colony, where he was imprisoned on fraud charges many viewed as politically motivated, and his death has sparked fears he was murdered by the state.

Although there are no obvious similarities between Navalny and Trump, who is currently campaigning to win a second stint in the White House, Greene is apparently seeking to draw a parallel as Trump is mired in legal woes and facing various court cases.

Greene's claims that President Joe Biden and his party hope to imprison 77-year-old Trump until his death was part of a 343-word diatribe she posted on X, which alleged the Democrats "are going to lecture everyone again and blame 'Russian disinformation' and call us 'Russian sympathizers' for exposing Biden family influence peddling."

Greene said: "While Democrats suddenly care about Putin's political opponent dying in jail, Democrats are actively locking up J6'ers [those participating in the January 6 Capitol riots] and Biden's DOJ [Department of Justice] is trying to put Pres Trump in prison for the rest of his life which would be a death sentence.

"Talk about election interference!

"Democrat policies are so bad and the Biden admin has done such a horrible job by enabling a deadly invasion of over 10 million illegals into our country and is destroying the value of our dollar with high inflation and energy killing green new deal c*** that the only thing they can run on is blame Trump and scream Russia."

She ended her post saying: "So for all of us who just care about America, the American people, our hard earned American tax dollars, get ready to be called a 'Russian blah blah blah' because Democrats know that Trump is going to win and they are setting up to refuse to certify his election."

Her post was shared more than 3,000 times, and garnered dozens of comments.

Some were supportive of her comments. One X user wrote: "The People know the Truth. We are tired of the lies and deceptive actions in our government . Thank you MTG. You are a Patriot."

Another added: "Go MTG!" And a third said: "I agree with you completely."

But the vast majority of those responding to Greene's post were critical, with many slamming her stance on Russia and for comparing the U.S. to Putin's regime.

One X user wrote: "Greene's claim about Democrats throwing around 'Russian sympathizer' accusations like confetti at a parade? Truth hurts. [...] Comparing the legal repercussions for the January 6th rioters and Trump's legal challenges to Putin's jailing of political opponents? That's not just misleading; it's an insult to the integrity of the U.S. judicial system. These processes are part of America's legal fabric, not a playbook out of Putin's Russia."

Another X user wrote: "Actually we're going to call you the party of Putin, not sympathizers, Comrade Greene [...] You can try to downplay it all you want, but America can see the truth." And another commentator added: "Everything you post is Russian propaganda."

Newsweek has reached out to representatives for Greene, Trump and Biden, seeking further information and comment.
