After months of waiting, Netflix finally released the first trailer for Narcos: Mexico on Thursday and El Padrino is calling the shots now.
The trailer offered the first real look at Diego Luna as the Mexican drug lord Felix Gallardo—otherwise known as El Pardrino, the godfather of Mexico's cocaine industry—and Michael Peña as undercover DEA agent Kiki Camarena, along with several other new faces. The series is expected to debut on Netflix on November 16.
Of course, there wasn't a shortage of guns, explosions, drugs and violence in the nearly minute-long spot, hinting the Mexico installment will likely be just as bloody and vicious—if not more—than the series' former unraveling of Colombian cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar's story in the first three seasons.
Netflix revealed the location change and said the cast would no longer include former Narcos stars Wagner Moura and Pedro Pascal, who starred as the notorious Escobar and DEA agent Javier Peña respectively, back in December.
The new season will follow the life of Gallardo, described as the "quiet but bold, inscrutable but sharp-minded," founder and his Guadalajara Cartel's rise to power. "What I'm doing here, I'm building an empire," Gallardo says in the clip.
In one brief glimpse of the trailer, Michael Peña's character is seen tied up to a chair, teasing his imminent death. While it's unclear if Camarena's death will be featured in Season 4, it is commonly known he was assassinated under Gallardo's instruction back in 1985. Gallardo is currently still behind bars for the killing of Camerena.
Gallardo's enterprise was largely responsible for flooding narcotics along the U.S.-Mexico border, while Camarena, a Mexican-born U.S. resident, was responsible for infiltrating the group and spying on them for the DEA.
"Narcos: Mexico will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers," the series synopsis states.
