'Timeless' Canceled by NBC, but Movie Could Give Fans Closure

Sorry, Clockblockers. There's bad news for fans of NBC's Timeless.

The time-travel drama will not be coming back for Season 3, Entertainment Weekly reported Friday. NBC canceled the series last year, after its first season, but renewed it due to the outcry from fans. This decision, however, is "permanent—at least as a full-fledged series on the NBC side," according to EW.

Still, considering that two canceled Fox shows have already been saved this spring—Brooklyn Nine-Nine by NBC and Lucifer by Netflix—it isn't crazy to hope this isn't the end of Timeless, especially after that big Season 2 finale cliff-hanger.

Co-showrunners Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke both addressed the possibility of a movie to wrap up the story, while thanking fans and confirming the bad news on Twitter.

"This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans," Ryan wrote in the first of a series of tweets.

"If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2 hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it," Ryan continued. "We don't want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet."

Lead actors Abigail Spencer (Lucy), Matt Lanter (Wyatt) and Malcolm Barrett (Rufus) are expected to be released from their contracts by the end of June, according to EW. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Kripke echoed Ryan's sentiment. "Gutted by this, guys, I know you are too," he wrote to the show's fans, also known as Clockblockers, on Twitter. "Behind the scenes, Sony has been trying hard to set it up elsewhere, but no luck so far. I think this 2 hour movie is our best shot."

Kripke proceeded to thank the cast, writers, crew and fans of the series and added, "Whether there's a show or not, we're all family now. We're all #clockblockers, baby."

Lanter and Spencer both expressed a desire to see the show continue in some capacity. Timeless fans, meanwhile, are especially eager for the story to continue because of how the Season 2 finale ended. (Spoilers below!)

During one of the trips to the past, Rufus died. However, after Lucy and Wyatt returned to the present, a future version of their time-traveling ship the Lifeboat showed up in the bunker where they were staying. Future versions of Lucy and Wyatt stepped out and asked if they wanted to get Rufus back.
