A recall for nearly 100,000 pounds of ground beef was issued over the weekend by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The recall of the beef is for a possible E.coli contamination, the FSIS said in a statement posted to the agency's website.
The recalled meat originated from Swift Beef Company, located in Hyrum, Utah. The recalled items were shipped to retail distributors for processing and to food service distributors to use in locations in California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
Products impacted by the recall are:
• Bulk pallets of Swift Ground Beef 81/19 (81% lean) Fine Grind Combo bearing product code 42982.
• Plastic wrapped chubs of "blue ribbon BEEF" Ground Beef 81/19 (81% lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42410.
• Plastic wrapped chubs of "blue ribbon BEEF" Ground Beef 93/07 (93% lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42413.
• Plastic wrapped chubs of "blue ribbon BEEF" Ground Beef 85/15 (85% lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42415.
• Plastic wrapped chubs of "blue ribbon BEEF" Ground Beef 73/27 (73% lean) Coarse Grind bearing product code 42510.
All products were produced on Oct. 24, 2018.
The recall is the second in as many days for Swift Beef Company. FSIS issued an initial recall for 523 pounds of beef on Nov. 16 after a sample of meat located at a processing facility tested positive for E.coli.
A list of those recalled products is available here. All products were produced on Nov. 8, but there have been no reports of illness or adverse effects in connection to the items.
Swift Beef is part of JBS USA which recalled 6.9 million pounds of meat in a 25-state area after an outbreak of salmonella in early October, CBS News reports. Fifty-nine people have been hospitalized, while the Centers for Disease Control reports 246 people have fallen ill due to the contamination.
A spokesperson for JBS USA told CBS MoneyWatch that "only one sample in commerce tested positive and no consumers have reported illness, we have taken this cautious approach in the interests of consumer safety."
