It appears A Wrinkle In Time hasn't tethered Ava DuVernay to Disney. Deadline reports the award-winning director is already set for an exciting new project with Warner Bros., and it's a good one: The New Gods.
This a huge addition to the DC films line. The New Gods are some of DC's most unusual and intriguing characters, rooted deep in sci and fantasy, and not the most approachable for new fans. A Jack Kirby creation, the New Gods are beings from Apokolips and New Genesis who live in a realm known as the Fourth World. Comic book cinema is an ever-changing, growing industry and this is a risk that could very well pay off for DC under the direction of DuVernay.
One very popular New God in DC Comics right now is Mister Miracle. Tom King and Mitch Gerads' new series is one of the best books of the year. Maybe not so coincidentally, looking back, but Ava DuVernay revealed she was a fan as well. When asked to name her favorite superhero on Twitter, she gave what came as a surprising answer to many: Big Barda, a New God and wife of Mister Miracle.
The New Gods takes place outside of the confines of the DC multiverse. For example, the New Gods of Earth Prime are the same New Gods of Earth-2. The New Gods travel with boom tubes (think interdimensional wormholes), which will be super cool to see on the big screen. The Highfather rules New Genesis, often portrayed as a heavenly planet of paradise. Darkseid is the ruler of Apokolips, a hellish planet.
We've already seen hints for the New Gods in DC films so far. The most interesting is in Batman V Superman extra scene where we see Lex Luthor and Steppenwolf (Darkseid's uncle) with a Mother Box, a New Gods technology of near infinite capacity. There's also a reference to a Mother Box in a bonus scene from Wonder Woman. The exploration of the "old gods" via flashbacks in Patty Jenkins' film also heavily suggest the existence of the New Gods, who came after the destruction of the old.
There are plenty of compelling New Gods, other than Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Darkseid and Highfather. One with defining traits is Metron, a New God who claims no allegiance to either of the twin planets. He's known for his Mobius Chair, which allows him to travel to and observe different dimensions at will. There are so many other options too, like Orian, Infinity Man, Black Racer and Desaad, but that's a whole other story. Oprah as Granny Goodness, anyone?
