Speculation has been rife since January that Green Day are back in the studio working on their first album in four years. Marking the start of 2016, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shared a snap of himself in a recording studio and teased on Twitter he wanted to put an end to the phrase "pop-punk." That certainly suggests the veteran group, who are no strangers to reinventing themselves, plan on yet another musical revolution sometime this year.
Buzz around the rumored new project mounted again in recent days after a fan on online forum Green Day Community claimed he bumped into Armstrong in Oakland, California, on Sunday and was told that, yes, Green Day are recording a new album.
Well, good news for fans—it's true.
The band's long-time publicist Brian Bumbery confirms to Newsweek the "American Idiot" rockers are indeed recording their 12th studio album.
As for when the record might be released, that part remains a mystery. Green Day Community user Insomniac186 wrote that Armstrong told him it should "hopefully be out in the fall." Bumbery couldn't confirm a release date when contacted by Newsweek .
A release this year would make sense, however, as 2016 marks the band's 30th anniversary. Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt formed Green Day in 1986. Coming full circle, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2015.
The new LP would follow on from the group's 2012 ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! trilogy that consisted of three full-length studio albums released in separate months.
Green Day last shared new music in 2015 when they released a Christmas song, "Xmas Time of Year," in December.
