Democrat Donald Payne Jr. Dies After Hospitalization for 'Cardiac Episode'

New Jersey Democratic Rep. Donald Payne Jr. died at 65 on Wednesday after he was hospitalized with a "cardiac episode."

The New Jersey Globe first reported the news of Payne Jr.'s death, noting that he served in Congress for six terms.

In a statement posted to X, formerly Twitter, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed the news, saying, "Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our friend, and a steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr."

"Our heartfelt prayers are with his family during this difficult time," Murphy said.

Earlier this month, Payne Jr.'s office issued a statement announcing that he had been hospitalized with a "cardiac episode."

"Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. suffered a cardiac episode based on complications from his diabetes last week," the statement said. "Today, he is in stable condition at a local hospital and continues to be under doctor's care. While we hope for a full recovery, we ask everyone to keep him in your prayers."

Following his hospitalization, fellow Democratic New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill issued a statement saying, "My heart is with my friend Congressman Donald Payne and his family following the cardiac episode he experience this past weekend. Donald is a fighter and I'm encouraged that his prognosis is good and he is receiving the medical care he needs. I join New Jerseyans praying for a speedy recovery."

Following his passing, Payne Jr.'s seat in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District will be open, but the New Jersey Globe reported that he was expected to face no opposition in the June 4 Democratic primary. Democratic county committee members could pick Payne Jr.'s replacement, or Murphy could potentially call a special election, the New Jersey Globe reported.

Newsweek reached out to Payne Jr.'s press office via email for comment.

In his statement on Wednesday, Murphy said, "With his signature bowtie, big heart, and tenacious spirit, Donald embodied the very best of public service. As a former union worker and toll collected, he deeply understood the struggles our working families face, and he fought valiantly to serve their needs, every single day."

"It was my great honor to work side-by-side with Donald to build a stronger and fairer New Jersey, and we will hold his memory close to our hearts as we build upon the Payne family's deep legacy of service in advocating for the communities they served so dearly," Murphy added.

New Jersey State Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato said, "With deep sadness, we mourn Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr.'s passing. His unwavering dedication to public service & advocacy for the 10th Congressional District will be forever remembered. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, & colleagues."
