New Jersey, New York Earthquake Sparks Wave of Jokes and Memes

An earthquake was felt on Friday morning in New York and New Jersey, sparking many jokes and memes across social media.

An earthquake hit White House Station, New Jersey, and registered at a 4.7 magnitude. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) originally reported the quake as a 4.8 out of Lebanon, New Jersey. Shaking was felt for miles even in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Governors in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, all confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that an earthquake rattled areas in their respective states.

"Our region just experienced an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, with an epicenter near Readington in Hunterdon County. We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency," New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said.

New York City Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy said on social media that Mayor Eric Adams was being briefed.

"@NYCMayor is being briefed. While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we're still assessing the impact," he wrote.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said that officials were being informed about the earthquake, but noted that "while we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we're still assessing the impact."

Shortly after people felt the earthquake, many shared jokes and memes on social media.

"We survived the NYC earthquake. We will rebuild," X user Brandon Trusso wrote, sharing a photo of a trashcan.

X user Nick Yoder shared an image of backyard chairs and said, "I just photos of the destruction out in Long Island."

X user Andrew LaSane shared a meme video and wrote, "Everyone in NY just now. #earthquake."

X user @j__43_ shared a video and commented, "The #earthquake hitting a couple days before the eclipse the world ending."

X user @laylology shared an image from the show, Sex and the City, and wrote, "as a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit manhattan i couldn't help but wonder...was my relationship with big structurally sound enough to withstand the impact?"

The Daily Show on Comedy Central joked in a post saying "CNN: Earthquake Hits Tri-State Area. MSNBC: Earthquake in NYC. FOX NEWS: The earth can't even stay still anymore, because of woke."

X user @CapXSid shared a video of former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Vince McMahon and wrote, "me explaining to my grandkids how I survived the bronx and a earthquake ... #earthquake."

X user @ExVilln wrote, "Y'all felt that too? #earthquake," and shared a gif of actress Raven-Symoné.

X user @HNICBrian wrote, "Like & Retweet if you survived the #earthquake #NYC," and shared an image that said, "I survived the NYC earthquake on April 5th, 2024."
