Commuters looking to take the subway to the Javits Center for New York Comic Con this year may have to find an alternate route. The 7 Train won't be running Saturday or Sunday.
Some con-goers noticed a planned service change on the official MTA website, citing signal modernization work from Saturday, Oct. 6 to the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 8.
The 7 train will not run between Queensboro Plaza in Queens and the 34 Street-Hudson Yards stop in Manhattan. MTA will provide a free shuttle bus to replace the 7 line to get those heading to New York Comic Con to the Javits Center.
MTA spokesperson Jon Weinstein said in a statement:
"We are in the final stretches of deploying new, modern Communications Based Train Control signals on the 7 line – which is absolutely essential to delivering more reliable and more frequent service on the 7 line for years and years to come. We have robust alternative service scheduled to accommodate all the attendees of Comic Con–and other events–including shuttle buses from Times Square to Hudson Yards/Javits Center and additional buses on standby from a nearby depot that can be deployed as needed. We'll be actively and aggressively communicating service alternatives across all of our social media and announcement channels. The 7 line is on the precipice of a major, game-changing signalization upgrade for hundreds of thousands of daily riders, 2019 Comic Con attendees, and basically everyone – this weekend's work is key to that effort."
Of course, the first two days of New York Comic Con 2018 won't be affected by the 7 train service change, but commuters looking to attend the convention on Saturday and Sunday will need to allow extra travel time.
The Hudson Yards extension on the 7 train opened Sept. 13, 2015 after eight years of construction, providing easy access to the Javits Center and the surrounding area.
