Is the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq Open For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day?

Those wanting to trade or buy stocks on January 21 will be out of luck, as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed on Monday in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

NYSE

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) honors nine holidays during the calendar year, with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day being the second holiday of the year that is celebrated. The stock exchange will be closed for regular trading that day but will reopen on Tuesday.

Pre-opening sessions begin at 3:30 a.m., with the early trading session running from 4 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET. According to the NYSE's website, core trading hours run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and late trading hours go from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

Nasdaq

Like the NYSE, Nasdaq will also be closed on Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Nasdaq is closed nine holidays during the year and closes early during three days: July 3, November 29 and December 24.

Nasdaq shares a similar trading schedule to the NYSE, with pre-market trading hours running from 4 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Normal market hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and after market hours run until 8 p.m.

Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will next be closed for President's Day on February 18. The markets will remain open until the following holiday in April, Good Friday. The NYSE will close on Good Friday, while Nasdaq will close early at 2 p.m.

The stock market has had a rocky last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted to 21,792.20 on Christmas Eve, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also suffering losses. On January 14, Nasdaq was down 65.56 points at closing time and the Dow Jones was down 86.11 points.
