NFL Trade Deadline 2023: Time, Date, Things to Know Before Halloween Cutoff

The 2023 NFL season is nearing its midpoint, which means one of the most unpredictable dates on the league's calendar has almost arrived.

Only one week remains until this year's NFL trade deadline. The next seven days will give contenders around the league, such as the Kansas City Chiefs or Philadelphia Eagles, a final chance to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. Or, in the case of the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and other struggling teams, it may be time to part with some valuable assets and start looking toward 2024.

Here's what football fans should know ahead of the 2023 NFL trade deadline.

What Time Is the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline?

NFL teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 31, to complete any trades. Afterward, there will be no trades until the 2024 league year starts. Teams will have to rely on adding veterans via the waiver wire or free agency after the deadline passes.

In other words, the NFL trade deadline wraps up just before trick-or-treating gets going.

How Many Trades Could There Be?

If last year was any indication, trade deadline day could be busy.

The NFL usually can't match the excitement of the NBA or MLB trade deadlines, but last season was an exception. Twelve players were traded on deadline day in 2022—as part of 10 total deals—the most in the last 30 seasons. The 20 players traded in the weeks leading up to the deadline were the most in NFL history, according to CBS Sports.

When Can NFL Teams Trade Again?

Once the cutoff point passes on Halloween, NFL teams are prohibited from making trades until the start of the next league year, on March 13. The NFL's trading period for 2024 begins at 4 p.m. ET on that day, after the expiration of all 2023 contracts. That will also mark the beginning of free agency.

The NFL's annual league meeting will be held March 24-27 of next year. Every club getting together usually sparks at least some transactions.

Notable In-Season NFL Trades Recently

Some big names have been traded in-season in recent years.

Just last season, the 49ers acquired All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers for a slew of draft picks. T.J. Hockenson, Bradley Chubb, Roquan Smith and Calvin Ridley were among the other standouts traded before the 2022 deadline.

The year before, the Rams traded for pass-rusher Von Miller to bolster their defense for an eventual Super Bowl-winning run. And in 2019, the Rams made another blockbuster move by trading for Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Could Titans running back Derrick Henry be the big name dealt this season? Or maybe Vikings edge-rusher Danielle Hunter will be on the move? Within a week's time, we'll find out.
