It's been roughly four months since Big Mouth Season 2 hit Netflix in October of last year, but fans are in for a treat as the show unveils a special Valentine's Day-themed episode on Friday, February 8.
Big Mouth is a half-hour animated comedy show that explores the ups and downs of going through puberty. It was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. Kroll stars alongside John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen. After Season 1 arrived in September 2017, it proved to be an instant hit, garnering an impressive 100 percent grade from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
On Friday, Big Mouth's newest episode, "My Furry Valentine" will explore an assortment of topics, from Nick (Kroll) getting a female hormone monster to how the kids at the fictional Bridgeton Middle School tackle Valentine's Day. Taking binge culture into consideration, the idea to release a single episode came about as a way to gift fans with more Big Mouth as Season 3 approaches, at a date that's yet to be announced.
"Valentine's Day felt like such a rich area for us to explore because it deals with so many things that are so adolescent and middle school-centric," Kroll, 40, explained to Newsweek. "Crushes and 'I like this person but this person doesn't like me.' 'Why am I alone?' All the stuff I think is so pervasive to Valentine's Day that doesn't always get dealt with."
Netflix renewed Big Mouth for Season in November 2018. However, Kroll said the arrival of its Valentine's Day-centered episode is meant to serve as an early kickstart to the upcoming season.
"I think it's fair to say we perceived of it as a bridge between Season 2 and 3. It really is the beginning of Season 3," he said. "We started writing this about a year ago."
Kroll elaborated on how they aimed to make the Season 3 lead-in episode feel "really special" for viewers, adding: "We thought we would add more songs than normal. We have three songs in this. The opening [song]—that number talks about the actual feelings people have on Valentine's Day... So much of the framing of the show is [inspired by] When Harry Met Sally and [other] romantic comedies...T hat felt like a really fun way to make the episode feel different."
Big Mouth Seasons 1 and 2 as well as the Valentine's Day special are now streaming on Netflix.
