An American writer hasn't won the Nobel Prize for literature since 1993, when the Swedish Academy bestowed the honor on Toni Morrison. Since then, the Nobel committee has indicated that it finds American literature too cloistered, not concerned enough with the world beyond the U.S. borders. That has dismayed many in the American literary establishment, who hope one of its favored candidates may yet win over Stockholm.
