On Thursday, Jagex released its latest Old School Runescape (OSRS) Treasure Trails expansion. The new update is a sizable one adding a ton of new challenges and features for beginners and veterans alike. While a large portion of the content targets beginning and free-to-play players, the devs also included changes to content for premium subscribers as well. In the update, new scrolls clue rewards have been added, and the frequency with which Elite and Master puzzlers can encounter the Mimic Boss has increased as well. These are just a few of the many changes listed in the Treasure Trails update patch notes. Below, we've put together a complete overview of everything new and changed in the latest update.

Note: How To Update Runelite - If you are playing OSRS via the RuneLite client, you will need to restart the client. Once restarted the new update should take effect.

Beginner Clue Scrolls

One of the biggest changes the Treasure Trails expansion brings is the addition of beginner clue scrolls. In the past, clue scrolls were only available for premium subscribers, but with today's update free-to-play players have access to a new set of beginner clue scrolls. The new clues are a series of short 1-3 step clues that can be completed by any player regardless of experience or membership. The new clues offer rewards for completing them but veteran players are not required to complete beginner clues in order to obtain Watson's Master clues. You can check out our guide with all the new clue scroll solutions, here.

Arthur the Clue Hunter

To help new players understand how clue scrolls work, the update adds a new tutor named Arthur the Clue Hunter. Arthur will teach players everything they need to know about clue scrolls and where to find them. Arthur is located inside the Sheared Ram Pub in Lumbridge.

X Marks the Spot

Besides a new tutor, the update provides a segue from the X Marks the Spot Quest to Beginner Clue Scrolls. When the quest is complete, Veos will now reward players with a Beginner Clue Scroll, and direct them to talk to the new clue tutor to learn more about it. If you have already completed the quest, you'll still be able to claim your Beginner Clue Scroll reward from Veos. Stash units have been added around the free-to-play area for Beginner Clues that require items to be worn.

Charlie's Clues

Though traditional clue scrolls have included riddles anagrams and ciphers, beginners will encounter a new type of clue scroll aimed at teaching them how to craft new items and equipment. These clues come from a homeless man in the game called Charlie.

Mimic Boss Changes

Encounters with the Mimic Boss can be somewhat rare, but in the latest Treasure Trails expansion, the devs have increased the Mimc rate to 1 in 35 for Elite Clues and 1 in 15 for Master clues.

Mimic Caskets

Additionally, players now have a chance at finding a Mimic casket when opening Elite (1 in 80 chance) and Master (1 in 30 chance) clue caskets. When players open a casket and find it's a Mimic, they may take them to the Strange Casket to face the boss. The option to find Mimic caskets must be enabled by the player. Here's how to do it:

  • Speak to the Strange Casket at Watson 's house.
  • If you don't wish to encounter the Mimic, you can disable the feature there as well.

How Mimics Work: Getting the 3rd Age Ring

Mimics from Master clues allow players 6 chances to kill the boss, while Elite players receive 5. Each time players fail to kill the boss (by getting killed or leaving the instance), their potential loot is decreased. If players falls to the Mimic, they can reclaim their items for a fee of 90,000 GP from the Strange Casket in Watson's house. If a player manages to defeat the Mimic on the first try, however, a unique reward awaits them: the 3rd Age Ring .

Additional Treasure Trail Changes

  • Stackable Caskets - Each tier of reward casket is now stackable. This means you can save up your clue rewards and see them all at once if you wish. Following the Treasure Trails expansion poll, only the caskets are stackable and clues themselves can still only be held one a time per tier.
  • Watson's Teleport Scrolls - You can now hand in Master Scroll Books to Watson for a random number of Watson teleport scrolls. These will teleport you outside of Watson's house in Kourend.
  • Updated Clue Inventory Icons - The inventory icons for each clue tier has been updated to make it easier to tell them apart.

Easter Event 2019

The final change added to the April OSRS update is the annual Easter Event. As in the past, players are in for a pun-filled celebration of Spring. During the event, players are tasked with helping the Easter Bunny gather ingredients to fuel his egg-making machine. Players must tunnel through the Easter bunny's burrow system to find his helpers Eg, Egg and Eggy who will aid in finding the needed ingredients. Completing the event allows players to unlock all the previous Easter holiday event rewards as well as some new ones.

Bug Fixes & Maintenance Outages (UK)

Wednesday, German worlds were taken offline for maintenance. Additional maintenance will occur in the following UK worlds on April 17 at 4 a.m. EDT (9 a.m. BST) : 302, 308, 309, 310, 316, 317, 318, 325, 326, 333, 334, 341, 342, 349, 350, 358, 364, 365, 366, 371, 372, 373, 379, 380, 381, 382, 407, 408

Here are the fixes for the maintenance period:

  • Last week's change to cannon splashing has been adjusted so that the cannon remains capable of doing at least 1 damage occasionally, even if your accuracy is very low.
  • The Account Management tab now has an Old School Wiki link among other useful links.
  • Default skirts have had their rendering order adjusted to clip with less things.
  • The Gilded scimitar, Gilded boots and 3rd age cape can now be stored in the PoH treasure chest.
  • A bug where it was possible to have more than one Clue scroll of the same tier has been fixed.
  • Zulrah is now less likely to flicker when attacked with certain weapons.
  • It is now easier to steal a target player from combat if they're splashing on PvP and DMM worlds; they now become vulnerable to this 40% earlier than previously.
  • The plants adjacent to the bird house site in the Verdant Valley of Fossil Island have been changed to avoid interfering with clicks on the bird house.
  • Following last week's nerf to the damage XP on Hespori flowers, we've restored a little bit of XP so that the XP drop can once again show that damage has registered.
