Owner Reveals 7 Signs Your Dog Is Connected to You

A dog owner from Oregon has shared the signs that your dog is connected to you, featuring her charming goldendoodle Luca.

"I wanted to share ways that dogs communicate with us. They might not be able to speak, but their actions are the true definition of 'actions speak louder than words,'" Jovita told Newsweek.

Her motivation for creating the video was deeply personal, having lost her beloved dog Vito a few years ago. "Vito used to stare into my eyes for what felt like hours. He was my soul-dog," Jovita said. After losing Vito, she found solace in Luca, who began mirroring her late dog's behavior, particularly the intense eye contact. "It's been almost two years since we lost Vito, and since then, I've been building my bond with Luca," she explained.

The video highlights seven signs of a strong canine-human connection, including bringing gifts, following everywhere, sleeping nearby, giving puppy kisses, seeking attention, perking up at the sound of their name, and, of course, maintaining eye contact.

Accredited dog trainer Joe Nutkins told Newsweek: "Lots of the actions in this list could absolutely be linked and indicate a close bond between dog and owner."

Nutkins emphasized that while these signs are heartwarming, every dog has a different personality, meaning that just because your dog doesn't display these behaviors, doesn't mean a lack of connection.

"One big indicator that we have a great connection with our dogs? When we look at them and they see us, we get recognition with a tail wag, a smile, an ear prick or maybe a little chat, and that feeling is priceless," Nutkins said.

How To Build a Better Connection With Your Dog

For those looking to strengthen their bond with their furry friends, Nutkins provided practical advice: "Do activities your dog enjoys; something fun and entertaining really boosts the bond."

While she also suggested: "Spend time with your dog, and just your dog! It's too easy to be distracted by our phones or the TV. Be present with your dog."

However you spend time with your dog, it is important to give them patience and space to come to you. "Whether a puppy, dog you've had years or a rescue dog, letting your dog choose to come to you will give them confidence and build the bond," said Nutkins.

Jovita's video has resonated with dog owners who shared their thoughts and reactions.

"This is so beautiful," said one commenter. While another wrote: "He's so cute."

Of the seven ways that Luca shares his love with his owner, Jovita does have a favorite. "It's the puppy kisses," she said. "He loves to give kisses. He also loves to sleep on me which is sometimes awkward—in a funny way—he's 59 pounds and he'll just climb all over me and snuggle up."
