A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said. The earthquake struck about 85 miles east southeast of Kimbe, in West New Britain, and 43 miles from Pomio, at a depth of about six miles.
It was not immediately clear whether there was any significant damage or injuries as a result of the quake.
Magnitude 5 and magnitude 6 earthquakes are described on the Richter Scale as moderate quakes, with strong and sudden movements.
Another large earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on October 10—that one, a magnitude 7.0. The earthquake hit about 25 miles from Pomio, the USGS said. A number of other, smaller quakes have struck the region recently, including a 2.8 earthquake on October 12 and two earthquakes—a magnitude 5.6 and a magnitude 4.8— on October 11.
