Patrick Mahomes Breaks More NFL Records as Chiefs Lose MNF Classic Against Rams

The Kansas City Chiefs might have fallen short against the Los Angeles Rams but Patrick Mahomes broke yet another record in his extraordinary season.

The eagerly awaited showdown between the NFL's most exciting offenses did not disappoint as the Rams won an instant classic 54-51, the third-highest total ever for an NFL game and the highest-ever tally in the history of Monday Night Football.

The Chiefs became the first ever team in NFL history to score 50 or more points and lose but Mahomes wrote himself in the history books by becoming the first quarterback to throw for six touchdowns on Monday Night Football.

Kansas' second year quarterback completed 33 of his 46 passes for a career-high 478 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, to which he added 28 rushing yards across six attempts. Mahomes and his Rams counterpart, Jared Goff, engaged in a duel for the ages, which saw them end up with a quarterback rating of 117.6 and 117.1 rating. Goff threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns.

According to figures compiled by Elias Sports Bureau, the Chiefs quarterback is also the first player since 1933 to record six passing touchdowns and five turnovers in the game, which included three interceptions and two fumbles.

The 23-year-old entered Monday Night Football with just seven interceptions to his name in the first 10 games of the season and the last two of his three pick-six on Monday night proved to be costly as they came in the Chiefs' last two possessions.

"These are the games that you're going to play hopefully in the playoffs," Mahomes was quoted as saying by ESPN. "You want to make sure you limit your mistakes but at the same time still be aggressive and still score points."

While the game ultimately ended in disappointment, there were plenty of positives for Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback has now thrown for four or more touchdowns in a game six times this season, tied for second-most season in a season since 1950. The only two players to throw for four touchdowns in more than six games during a season—Peyton Manning in 2004 and 2013 and Dan Marino in 1984—ended up being named MVP at the end of the season.

Mahomes' six touchdown passes took his tally for the season to 37, the third-most through a team's first 11 games in NFL history. Only Peyton Manning in 2004 and Tom Brady three years later had more passing touchdowns at this stage of the season.

To put things into context, Mahomes has thrown more touchdown passes in the first 10 games of the season than his predecessor, Alex Smith, did in each of his five seasons with the Chiefs.

With 102 passing touchdowns in 76 starts, Smith is fourth on the all-time list of touchdowns by a Chiefs quarterback, ahead of Elvis Grbac, who recorded 66 in 47 games. While at the start of the season it would have sounded absurd to even suggest Mahomes could be in the conversation, the former Texas Tech student could soon have Grbac firmly in his sight if he continues at this rate as he's projected to hit the 50 passing touchdowns mark this season.
