People are Sharing Photos of Their Chilled-Out Pets in a Viral Twitter Thread

One Twitter user sparked a viral conversation after posting a hilarious picture of a dog relaxing in a sliver of sunshine.

In the photo, the dog—which appears to be a dachshund or similar small breed—lays in a perfectly sized rectangle of sunlight. Its legs are outstretched behind its body, and its head rests on its front paws. In other words, the creature looks absolutely tranquil. "Peace of mind," reads the image caption, posted by @therealkimj.

The pup's peaceful demeanor seems to have resonated with the Twitter community. Since it was first shared on Saturday, the picture has amassed almost 90,000 retweets and over 880,000 likes. Among the thousands of replies and retweets, countless other Twitter users have been sharing photos of their own pets in similarly blissed-out states of relaxation.

"All dogs are solar powered, this is simply how they recharge," joked one Twitter user, alongside a picture of a little white dog sleeping in the sun.

"I love when dogs go into noodle mode," added another commenter.

However, dogs aren't the only creatures who love to soak up the rays. Some Twitter users posted pictures of their kittens basking in patches of warm light, and one even featured a gray rabbit midnap.

All animals reveal quite a bit through body language, and much can be deduced from looking at your pets' favorite sleeping positions. According to a breakdown provided by PetMD, the dog in the original viral photo would be categorized as sleeping in the "superman" position. They said that experts "aren't 100 percent sure" why dogs like to sleep in this pose, with their legs stretched out behind them, but they suspect it has something to do with temperature regulation.

"The fur on the dog's underside is not as deep and insulating as the fur on the rest of his body," writes veterinarian Dr. Stanley Coren. "What you call the 'Superman position'—with limbs outstretched and belly against the floor—is also a response to a warm environment, but usually occurs in situations where the surface that the dog is lying on is relatively cooler than the air around him."

Other popular sleeping positions include "the side sleeper," "the lion pose," "the donut," and "the cuddle bug," they said. The "side sleeper," where dogs lay on their sides with limbs outstretched, is reportedly "the most common posture that dogs use to sleep." They added, "This means that a dog is relaxed and comfortable and shows a level of trust with his surroundings."
