Powerball drawings are always held every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m and is the largest lottery game played in the U.S. The lottery website states that the multi-state game has nine different ways to play. The jackpot always starts with $40 million and continues to grow until someone wins the jackpot prize, the popular lottery website states.

Roger Birdsong and his family recently claimed their Powerball prize for $50,000. Birdsong and his family, who are from Columbia, Missouri, told lottery officials they were eating dinner when the group decided that each family member should purchase a Powerball ticket for the December 26 drawing.

The winning numbers drawn on December 26 were 5-25-38-52-67 and Powerball 24. Birdsong matched four out of the five white-ball numbers and the Powerball number, according to the Powerball website. The winning ticket was purchased at Steve-O's convenience store in Columbia, Missouri.

"I didn't believe it as the numbers were matching up," he said, noting that he'd checked his ticket at MOLottery.com the next day. "I had my son-in-law check, and he said, 'That's $50,000!' Then my son looked it up and he said, 'That's $50,000!'"

Birdsong and his wife, Beverly, claimed their $50,000 on Thursday. They told lottery officials this is the first big prize they have ever won.

"We were one number away from talking about millions," Birdsong teased lottery officials. "It's the first thing we've ever won!"

One of the biggest Powerball prizes was claimed in November after Lerynne West of Iowa and Robert Bailey of New York won the jackpot and walked away with $343.9 million each.
