The last person to claim a Powerball prize was a man from Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Robert Stanton, who is known to lottery officials as a "jackpot hunter" won $50,000 during the January 30 drawing. Stanton told lottery officials he purchased a $10 Powerball ticket from a 7-Eleven in College Park, Maryland. When he found out about winning the prize, he said he and the cashier at the convenience store celebrated together.

"I was blown away," he told lottery officials. "I think the clerk was as surprised as I was. We had a mini-celebration, she and I."

He recalls telling his wife, Suzanne, after waiting to tell her the good news when she came home that day.

"I wish I had sat down," she told lottery officials. "My knees certainly got a little wobbly."

Stanton told lottery officials he and his wife will use the money to help purchase their new home.

In other lottery news, the clock is ticking for a Mega Millions lottery winner who has yet to claim their billion dollar prize. The winning Mega Millions lottery ticket was worth $1.5 billion and was sold at a gas station in Simpsonville, South Carolina, during the October 23 drawing. Winners have 180 days to claim their prize, and the winnings will be returned to the 44 states that play the Mega Millions lottery.

"This is unusual, considering that it's $1.5 billion," South Carolina Lottery Commission's Holli Armstrong previously told The State.
