Today's PS5 System Update's Key Features Explained

Sony has confirmed the details of a new system software update to the PS5 that brings with it a raft of features previously available to PS5 beta testers.

Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of Platform Experience, confirmed the new additions in a blog post published Wednesday on the official PlayStation website.

They include "highly-requested" features like 1440p HDMI video output for compatible TVs or monitors. Compatibility can be checked by selecting "Test 1440p Output" under "Screen and Video" options within system settings.

PS5 Gamelists

In addition to this, players will also be able to create gamelists in their "Game Library." These gamelists will allow players to better organize their collections with the update to the system providing facility for anywhere up to 15 lists featuring a maximum of 100 games each. The same game can be added to multiple lists.

To access this function, players need to go to the "Your Collection" tab and select "Create Gamelist." From there it's a case of simply adding games to a gamelist and naming it.

Share Screen Functionality

The update will also bring with it improved "social" options like Share Screen functionality with a fellow party member which will allow players to request party members start Share Screen in order for them to watch their gameplay.

This function is accessible by going to the voice chat card, selecting the party member you want to send the request to, and then selecting "Request Share Screen."

Under the changes, New Friends' Profiles will be more accessible. When a friend request is accepted from the "Received" list, players will be able to view their new friend's profile under "Accepted Requests."

Stickers and voice messages can now also be sent to groups via the Game Base card.

New Notification System

More significantly still, a notification system has been added that means when a player joins a party and a party member is playing a game they can join they will receive a notification. They can then join the game directly from that notification.

Players will now also be able to listen and compare 3D Audio and Stereo on the same screen before choosing a preferred setting.

The update also improves access to in-progress activities. This means that when a player resumes a game, any in-progress activities will appear prominently at the top of the game hub making it quicker and easier for them to pick up where they left off.

Voice Command (Preview)

Nishino also revealed that a new Voice Command function will allow PS5 players to search for content on YouTube, though he did note that it is currently only available in English for PS5 users with accounts registered in either the U.S. or U.K.

"From anywhere on PS5, including during gameplay, you can say 'Hey PlayStation, find [keyword] on YouTube,'" he explained. "The YouTube app will open and relevant search results will be shown."

PS App Updates

He also outlined plans for the roll out of several new features on the PS App later this month.

Under the changes PS App Users will be able to launch a PS Remote Play session using the app on iOS and Android devices. Simply ensure the PS App is linked to the PS5 and that the console is in "Rest Mode."

Then it's just a case of selecting the "Play Using PS Remote Play" icon on a PS App game hub, and the game will automatically launch the game. Both the PS App and the PS Remote Play app must be installed on mobile or tablet for it to be used.

PS App Share Screen

As with the PS5 update, PS App users will also be able to request another party member playing on PS5 to start a Share Screen session.

"Thanks to all our fans for continuing to share your suggestions and ideas," Nishino wrote. "We're constantly listening to your feedback and committed to making your gaming and social experiences better with each update. See you online!"
