Answer from Susan Herman , ACLU President, Centennial professor of law at Brooklyn Law:
We are already making good on our vow that we would see Donald Trump in court if he followed through on his unconstitutional policy proposals. Our Brooklyn lawsuit, Darweesh v. Trump, resulted in the first court order stopping the government from implementing the inhumane and irrational provisions of the January 27 executive order (the "Muslim ban"). Some other examples:
- We now have over a dozen lawsuits around the country challenging provisions of the Muslim ban, on behalf of individuals and of groups including the International Refugee Assistance Project and HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society). We have also challenged cutting the number of refugees allowed into the United States.
- Our 50 ACLU affiliates coordinated filing Freedom of Information Act requests all around the country demanding information on how the immigration executive order has been executed (including whether or not federal officials have been complying with court orders).
- Because we believe that government transparency is critical, we have also filed requests for documents regarding President Trump's potential conflicts of interest, including his tax returns.
- We are continuing to go to bat for protestors, at Standing Rock and elsewhere.
- We are already litigating a case to prohibit discrimination against patients and employees because they are transgender or because they seek reproductive care, and we are preparing to respond to attempts by the federal government to legalize health care discrimination, or discrimination against LGBT couples and others. Religious liberty does not justify discrimination.
The whole list is already too long to include here. Our goal is to do whatever we can to stop or minimize unconstitutional actions, and at least to make the president think twice before he issues broad and damaging edicts.
