Photos, Videos Show Rainbow Bridge Explosion Aftermath

Photos and videos capturing the aftermath of Wednesday's deadly vehicle explosion at a checkpoint on the Rainbow Bridge near Niagara Falls have made their way across social media.

Thick smoke, flames on the pavement and a security booth singed by flames can be seen at a checkpoint on the American side of a U.S.-Canada bridge, where two people were found dead in the vehicle. Authorities said the vehicle exploded while crossing the bridge, which acts as a border crossing between the Ontario and New York state.

Although there is no immediate information on the cause of the explosion, it has raised concerns on both sides of the border with the White House saying President Joe Biden was "closely following developments" and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying officials were "taking this extraordinary seriously."

BNO News shared to X security camera footage showing the vehicle explosion happening with thick smoke.

"NEW: Security camera shows car bombing at the U.S.-Canadian border in Niagara Falls."

In a post to X, formerly Twitter, Stephen Marth, managing editor at Spectrum News 1 in Buffalo, New York, shared photos of the damage the explosion did to the security booth and said, "Unbelievable photos from the Rainbow Bridge vehicle explosion."

Spectrum News anchor JoDee Kenney shared photos of the damage to the security booth.

"From WNY Truckers Facebook page. @SenSchumer I'm closely monitoring the situation on the Rainbow Bridge crossing between the US & Canada in Niagara Falls Federal, state, & local law enforcement officials are on the ground and investigating. Follow guidance from emergency officials."

Meanwhile, videos from the scene also show heavy law enforcement presence and large flames and smoke coming near a toll booth at the Canadian border.

"This is the scene a few blocks from the Rainbow Bridge. Massive law enforcement scene, including bomb squad. Roads closed in the area as authorities investigate a "vehicle explosion." As a reminder, ALL border crossings in the area are closed in both directions," Spectrum News reporter Viktoria Hallikäär wrote on X.

As the investigation continues, the FBI, which is coordinating with local state, and federal law enforcement partners, said that "this situation is very fluid, that's all we can say at this time."

About 6,000 vehicles cross the Rainbow Bridge each day, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's National Bridge Inventory. About 5 percent is truck traffic, according to the federal data.
