Nut Recall as 'Life-Threatening' Warning Issued

A nut recall was issued this week alongside warnings of a possible "life-threatening" allergic reaction.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared a recall announcement from the Texas Pecan company, based in Dallas.

"Texas Pecan of Dallas TX is recalling 1 Lb and 8 oz products because it may contain an undeclared allergen," the announcement said. "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to( tree nuts, peanuts, almonds, Brazils, cashews, filberts, macadamias, pistachios, pecans, pine nuts, walnuts, soy, dairy (milk), sesame and wheat), run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products."

Over the past few weeks, the FDA has issued several similar recalls for a wide variety of products, including nuts, chocolate and candy. The recalls can be prompted by many different reasons, such as an undeclared ingredient or possible contamination with bacteria like salmonella.

The recall on Wednesday is for a number of different nut products sold by the Texas Pecan company. A full list of the products included in the recall can be found on the FDA website. The company states that the products were sold online or at the Texas Pecan company's retail location.

The recall announcement states that the products included are "the 1 lb and 8 oz bags with lot numbers found on the bottom left corner ranging from 23200-23265 and 24001-24079."

"All bags are a clear poly bag with our Texas Pecan label on them," the announcement said. "There have not been any reports of related illness or allergic reactions to any of the product ever purchased at Texas Pecan."

The recall was prompted following a routine check from the Texas Department of State and Health Services. Officials with the agency inspected packaging for the different recall products and "decided that cross contamination was possible as our labels do states tree nut but each tree nut was not named individually."

"Our packaging machine is cleaned properly however our written documentation did not clearly state that," the company said.

Customers who have previously purchased the recalled items are encouraged to discard of them or return them to the Texas Pecan company for a full refund.

Earlier this month, Hormel Foods Sales announced a recall of several of their Planters nut products.

"The recalled product is limited to 4 oz. packages of PLANTERS® Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75 oz. cans of PLANTERS® Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. The 'Best if Used By Date' is located on the bottom of the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts can and the UPC is located on the side of the can," the recall announcement said.

In 2020, Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research said that roughly 1 million children in the U.S. are affected by peanut allergies and "only 1 out of 5 of these children will outgrow their allergy."

"Peanut allergy is a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly identifies even small amounts of peanut as harmful. Allergic reactions to peanut are unpredictable in occurrence and in how they present, with some individuals experiencing severe reactions from even trace amounts," the FDA wrote.
