As Rockstar announced on Monday, the latest Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer has been released. Before you get too excited, there really isn't anything new to see here. The trailer can be watched above.
The trailer opens by confirming the date is 1899, 12 years before the events of Red Dead Redemption. Like the previous game, the theme of Red Dead Redemption 2 seems to be about the decline of the "Wild" West as civilization creeps steadily towards the Pacific Ocean. This means outlaws, like new protagonist Arthur Morgan, must find ways to fit in with the new society, or die trying.
According to the trailer's description on YouTube, the plot will revolve around the fallout from a failed robbery. Morgan is a member of Dutch Van der Linde's gang of bankrobbers, the same outfit to which Red Dead Redemption's hero James Marston belonged. During the course of Red Dead Redemption 2, players must fight for freedom against federal agents and bounty hunters looking to capture the outlaws and bring them to justice.
This kicks off an internal conflict within Morgan. Does he have loyalty to the gang he has been a part of for years? Or does he do the right thing and turn himself in? Seeing as how Dutch and at least a few members of his gang show up in Red Dead Redemption, it seems like not everyone has the same inner turmoil.
Those looking for Red Dead Redemption protagonist John Marston, jump to the 1:39 mark in the video. Marston can be seen briefly getting thrown to his knees. Marston will likely be a member of the Van der Linde gang along with Morgan, and maybe even be the voice of reason that causes Morgan to have second thoughts about continuing his participation in the gang.
Missing from this new trailer is actual gameplay footage, as well as information about Red Dead Online. There are some stunning shots of the world of Red Dead Redemption 2, including a look at one of the towns featured in the game, a stage production of a firebreather and a whole lot of fancy philosophizing about mankind though. It's a nice trailer for sure, but it leaves me wanting more.
Red Dead Redemption 2 releases for PS4 and Xbox One on Oct. 26.
