One of the two pilots of Germanwings flight 4U9525 was locked out of the cockpit when the plane began to crash, according to a report from the New York Times on Wednesday. An investigator who reviewed the cockpit voice recorder determined that one pilot exited the cockpit before the plane began to crash. Once the descent began, the pilot was unable to reenter the cockpit. It is unclear why the pilot left the cockpit in the first place.
"The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer," the investigator told the Times. "And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer. You can hear he is trying to smash the door down."
The plane fell 38,000 feet in about eight minutes. All 150 passengers on board are presumed dead.
